Hello, I'm a first time user here on the forums and would be grateful for any help you can provide.

A couple weeks ago my computer would start skipping while playing videos or music files. I followed your instructions for malware removal and Super Anti Spyware found traces of Trojan/Gen-Nullo. It said that it removed the files and I haven't noticed any skipping of songs yet, but I was wondering in you could check my logs and see if I'm all clean or not.

Two things that I could not do on your removal guide was get rid of the "Ask Toolbar" or "My Way Search Assistant". I'm not sure if this will cause any issues or not.

    Much thanks for any help!
    Cheers!

I want you to run TDSSKiller so refer to the below for how to do so.

    TDSSkiller - How to run

Please also download MBRCheck to your desktop
    • Double click MBRCheck.exe to run (vista and Win 7 right click and select Run as Administrator)
    • It will show a Black screen with some information that will contain either the below line if no problem is found:
      • Done! Press ENTER to exit...
    • Or you will see more information like below if a problem is found:
      • Found non-standard or infected MBR.
      • Enter 'Y' and hit ENTER for more options, or 'N' to exit:
    • Either way, just choose to exit the program at this point since we want to see only the scan results to begin with.
    • MBRCheck will create a log named similar to MBRCheck_07.16.10_00.32.33.txt which is random based on date and time.

Please be aware that using the likes of : LimeWire 4.14.10 always invites in crap such as the below which you need to uninstall using Revo, which I will link to further on.
    • Mirar
You can also use Revo to uninstall My way Search assistant and Ask Toolbar.

    Try Revo Uninstaller.
Choose the option on the bottom of the list (#4). Be very careful while deleting the bolded registry items ONLY!! This software will create a system restore point for you as well prior to uninstalling a software program.

Now we need to use ComboFix
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box. Ensure you scroll down to select ALL the lines:
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    File::
    c:\windows\system32\win32k(2)(3).sys
    c:\windows\system32\wininet(2)(3).dll
    c:\windows\system32\urlmon(2)(3).dll
    c:\windows\system32\url(2)(3).dll
    c:\windows\system32\shdocvw(2)(3).dll
    c:\windows\system32\ole32(2)(3).dll
    c:\windows\system32\csrsrv(2)(3).dll
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe

      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif

    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If after running Combofix you discover none of your programs will open up, and you recieve the following error: "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion". Then the answer is to REBOOT the machine, and all will be corrected.

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    • O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

    After clicking Fix exit HJT.

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.

Let us know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running now!

    My thanks again!

Ok, I downloaded Revo Unistaller and was able to remove Mirar, My Way Search Assistant and Ask Toolbar! Thanks for the advice on Limewire, I'll be sure to stop using that and get rid of it.

On the ComboFix step, I ran into a problem. I dragged the script onto the .exe icon and it started to run. It asked me to update, so I let it. Then it ran it's course and towards the end it said that it was restarting Windows. The computer started shutting down, but now it's been stuck on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen for almost 2 hours now. I think it may have stalled (I'm having to post this from my laptop).

Should I power the computer down manually??
Is this going to cause problems with whatever ComboFix was doing?

I'll leave the computer as it is for now till I hear back from you.

    Thanks again for your time!

Power it down yourself. Restart, has combofix created a log or not?

Alright, I powered down the computer myself and luckily when Windows restarted ComboFix finished running and created a log, which I've attached! :)

I also deleted the toolbar using MGtools\analyse.exe, as you instructed.

And finally I ran the GetLogs.bat as well.

The computer seems to be running great!!
You are awesome, I can't thank you enough!!

Yes, the logs look good. Let's just do this little bit to finish off.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Delete this folder: (If it exists)
    c:\program files\AskSBar

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required (If we renamed it please rename it back to Combofix.exe.
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders
related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi again Kestrel13!,

I ran the fixME.reg that you asked me to, and I got a success message that it worked! :)

I found the AskSBar Folder on the C:\ drive and tried to delete it, but when I try, it gives me a message that reads "Cannot delete A2SRCHAS.DLL: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use".

Any advice on how to solve that error?

Other than that, things are running great and I'll be sure to follow your final steps once I hear back from you on the above error.

Thanks once again for all your help!! :)

    Download and run OTM.

Download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

    Code:
    :files
    c:\program files\AskSBar

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
    • Push the large http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/4174320048_f01c448b32_o.png button.
    • OTM may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
    • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it into notepad, save it as something appropriate and attach it into your next reply.

NOTE: If you are unable to copy/paste from this window (as will be the case if the machine was rebooted), open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and attach the contents of that document back here in your next post.

    Gone now? :)

    Hello again,

Ok, I downloaded the OTM.exe to my desktop like you instructed.
However, when I right-click the .exe file, I don't see an option for "Run as administrator". There is a "Run as. . . " option, which I tried, but it only gives me the option to run it as either of the two profiles I have on the computer. There is not option for Administrator.

Should I just run it from the profile that I currently use?

    Thanks!

Cool, it seems to have worked! The AskSBar folder is no longer under the C:\Program Files, instead it is now under the "Moved Files" folder of C:\OTM!

    You're awesome!! :)

Any other steps I should do for OTM?

Thanks again for your continued help, it is very much appreciated!!!

Open up OTM, and locate the "Cleanup" button, hit that.

    You are most welcome. :)

Woo-hoo! The OTM Clean Up seems to have done the trick! No more AskSBar Folder, thanks!

Should I now do the final steps that you outlined in post #9?
