Windows XP, SP 3, IE 8, WMP 11

This problem began after I removed a virus from my laptop.

Anytime I double click a video or sound file that has a default program of Windows Media Player, the file won't open and start playing.

If I open Windows Media Player and open the file within WMP the file plays fine.

This effects all files containing .mpg, .mpeg, .wmv, .avi, .mp3, .wav, .mid

I downloaded Glarysoft Registry Repair and ran it. It supposedly fixed a lot of registry errors but did not repair the problem with WMP.

What could have possibly happened and I do I restore this function?

    Hi

Likely lacking the file format linked with WMP (could try this with one file type, say mp3, rigth click one and choose Open With, then Choose Default Program, then highlight WMP and tick the Always remember box at the bottom, then try and double click a mp3 file and see if WMP opens)

    Could try this app HERE

*as for what happened, malware can do weird things, so would likely suspect that.

Perhaps you've lost your file type associations? Open Windows Explorer>Folder Options, File Types and look in the scroll box for the file extensions you listed and see what program opens them. If it's not Media Player, make them so and all should be well.

    Good luck.

I suppose I should have mentioned in my original post that I in Windows Explorer I went to Tools ==>Folder Options==>File Types and made sure all the video/audio types were associated with Windows Media Player. Thanks for pointing that out.

I tried the Fix WMP Utility as suggested but that was not successful.

I went to Control Panel==>Add/Remove Programs and removed WMP 11. Rebooted. I downloaded WMP 11 from Microsoft and installed. Rebooted. All seems to be restored and working properly.

I suppose I will never know the real root cause, I suspect something in Windows Register as there were a few other programs that I had to "repair" using the appropriate set up discs. My knowledge/understanding of Windows Register is not where obviously most of the other users on this forum are.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

Hey, as long as it's working now, that's all that matters :)

    Good show.
