Hey can you guys help me out? I have a problem when i go upgrade from XP to vista. I put in my vista ultimate cd, click upgrade blah blah and it starts. It goes through most of it without a problem, until it reaches the last step, 'Completing your upgrade'. This step gets to about 53% (somewhere inbetween there) and the computer restarts, which happens a few times during the installation. But what happens then is that that window pops up that states that there has been a problem starting and lets me choose to start it in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode w/ command, last known good config or normally. I have tried all of these options and i get the same result, when i click it, my screen turns black and when you think its going to boot, the computer just restarts, and does this circle. I have to revert my computer back to XP by selecting the windows roll-back option.. Can someone help or know whats going on?

PS: i meet the requirements as i have a 2.6ghz cpu, 1gb ram, ati x850XT with 256mb vram...

I also had tried to do an upgrade install but kept running into numerous problems. The only way i found to make it work was to format completely and reinstall a clean full copy, not an upgrade.

Problem is, you cannot do a "Clean Install" with the upgrade version of Vista. There is a way around the "Upgrade" for Vista, but it involves actually installing the OS on the machine first.

vista allows xp pro to be upgraded, thats what he is talking about. Nobody said anything about him using an upgrade version, but hes trying the upgrade install feature. I had similar issues when i tried to use my full edition vista dvd to upgrade it wouldn't work either. So he may have to do a clean install.

During the last phase (i.e. "Completing your upgrade"), but well before it hits 53%, hit shift+F10, which will open a command prompt. Type "devmgmt.msc" (no quotes) and press enter, which will open device manager. Find your video card, right-click on it, and disable it. Chances are it will install just fine, and then you just need to download the latest Vista drivers from the ATI website. Good luck!
