Not sure if this is the right spot to post this but I am sure someone will move it if it's not. LOL

My husband wanted me to upgrade his PC to Win 10 form Win XP.
The first thing I did was go in and check his Windows Update before I did anything. Well of coarse it needed updated (he never checks that). So I did the updates it needed and when it rebooted after the updates the screen shows nothing but black and the mouse arrow only shows up in the top left quarter of the screen. If you try to leave the top left quarter of his screen it looks like it is slipping behind something but the whole screen is black.

Any Ideas how to fix this other then a total system restore?
Please help me out here or he might shoot me!!!!!

You can't upgrade Windows XP to Windows 10. Only Windows 7 SP1 and newer can be upgraded.

Try this before doing a full restore.
(Step 1) Shutdown and power off the computer.

(Step 2) Once the computer is powered off, unplug the power cord. If it is a laptop also remove the battery. It is important that any way for the system to keep getting power is unplugged or unhooked.

(Step 3) With the power cord unplugged and the battery removed (if you have one), hit the power button a few times as if you are trying to turn on the computer. When you do this and the computer tries to turn on, all the electricity is drained out of the system.

(Step 4) Plug the power cord back in and reinsert the battery (if you have one) and turn the computer on.

Thanks to Tweaking.com - Windows Repair.

BTW Do you have the Windows XP CD?

Well I did not try to go to 10 yet. I was only doing windows updates so far.

I tried it a no luck. Same thing. :(

No I do not have a disk. Do I need one? I have 7 myself. He has 8 on his 2nd pc and I will update that to 10 but I would like to fix his other one first. :(

If you had a Windows XP disc you could do a repair that will leave all your files and 99% of the programs intact.
Before you do a total system restore, you can remove the HDD, fit it inside a caddy, connect it to another PC's USB port, and retrieve your important files.
Hopefully someone can suggest a more suitable option.

PS It could be that the monitor decided to retire at that moment. If you have one, try another monitor first.

I don't think its the monitor cause when it first boots up I see the blue start up screen then it goes to the windows screen and shows the windows 4 color swirl the it goes to a black screen that I can only see the mouse in the top left quarter of the screen and then if it sits long enough you can see the screensaver (windows logo floating around the screen) floating around but only when it hits that top quarter of the screen.

Yes it does. Now should I do a restore point?

    Good idea.
Then you have to remove those Windows Updates that you installed. You'll have to re-install them one at a time to find the culprit.

BTW Does he connect to the internet with the Windows XP PC?

Well I got it working and Microsoft said Windows Update will no longer work for Win XP. It will not even go to the Windows Update site anymore. They said it must be upgraded to Win 8 for any type of anything from Microsoft.

    GRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!

Soooo I am moving on to his Win 8 PC and I am going to update it to Win 10.

Thank you so much for all your help. You have been great.

For XP to get to Windows updates, it must be running SP3.

I have an XP computer. Because I have Office 2007 on it and that is still being patched, I fire up the computer at least once a month. I get the Office patches, it any and I also still get the monthly malicious malware removal tool at least I did in July of this year.

You really shouldn't have been surprised by this as there have been no updates for XP since support ended on April 8 last year. Not only that, but popups regularly occur reminding you that support for XP has ended. XP should still be usable but it's risky continuing to use it on the internet.
