Problem With Windows Update

I am going through an EXTREMELY frustrating problem I hope some of you can help me with. It involves Windows Update. For some time now, I have not been able to install any windows updates. The last update I see in the updates history is a very long time ago, July 2015. The shield on the Windows Update is red, which is obviously a bad sign. On both Most Recent Updates and Updates were installed it says 'NEVER'. I have the setting on install updates automatically. When I click the icon for updates I get the following: Windows could not search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. And then I get an error code: 80070490.By the way, I am on a HP computer, Windows 7, Home Premium, 64bit. For the past few days, I have run my problem all over the search engines and have tried several things, to no avail. Here is what I have done: 1) Ran Windows Update Troubleshooter-found 4 errors, repaired 3. 2. Ran a command for the system file checker. It said it found some errors, but could not repair all of them. 3) Ran the System Update Readiness Tool-it took FOREVER to install. It said it failed twice, then it said successful, yet no new updates were in the log. 4) Ran Mr. Fix It utility-nothing. What I am seeing over and over is that I most likely have a corruption in the registry called the CBS, or Component Based Servicing. Probably caused by a virus or malware(by the way I have a good anti virus and regularly do malware checks). Some have given lengthy comple(to me) steps to go into the registry manually and fix this CBS. I am not comfortable at all going into the registry and do a manual fix of this, unless someone can guide me in as simple language as possible step by step so I don't mess up. It also suggests some registry cleaners that may repair it. I have tried a few, but no luck. I even called Microsoft, and the lady said she could fix my problem, but for $149, and I am not going to pay that. But I am getting desperate. I can't seem to get this solved, and Windows Update is important. I also have made sure the Background Intelligence Transfer Service and the Windows Update in Services are both set to start and automatic. A few have said I have no choice but to do a complete repair or re-install of Windows 7 to fix that, but I am not going to do that. I don't have the installation disk anymore, besides. That's about it. I hope someone here can help me fix this, as I feel very uncomfortable going on with Windows Updates dysfunctional. I hope I have included all the info. you may need. In my 15 years of computing, this is the first and only problem I have not been able to fix on my own, so it must be a rough one. I look forward to hearing from readers. Thank you all very much.

I tried Windows Repair, no change. I tried the fix mentioned in the above message. There were some 'changes', but in the end, still the same. The only 'changes' were: 1) At the end, I got the message "Preparing to configure windows do not turn off your computer". Then a few moments later I caught on the screen for a few seconds "configuring windows updates 85%", then it jumped to the log in screen seconds after. I go to Windows Update and the shield is still red, I have never check for updates as it said in the tutorial and then checked for updates. The bar went by a few times then stopped with the same original error messages as above and same error code. So frustrating!!
The two KB downloads WERE installed, by the way. Is there any other way of manually installing Updates? Something is blocking them from coming through. I did discover something that I didn't know existed, the Windows Update log. I am glad I found this as it is LOADED with information about the recent updates on 9/23 the computer(and I) tried to load. There is much 'negative' information in here, so I decided to do a copy/paste as there might be some revealing info. here as to what is going on and how to fix this. Here is one part of the logfile:

A lot of problems, as you can see. This is all over my head, hopefully someone will be able to interpret it and maybe help me. I see that "CBS" thing coming up a lot and I know that is in the registry and it appears corrupted. I have tried SO many things at this point I am almost at the point of paying Microsoft the $149 to fix this. But I will hold off a little longer in the hopes someone can help me fix this horrible problem. Thanks a lot.

Use the WSUS Offline Update service. Several of us here fixed our Win 7 update problems with it. Instructions HERE.

 

I agree with Earthling. I was one of the people that used WSUS to get Windows 7 Updates to jump start. After WSUS finished, all of the remaining updates downloaded and installed without issue and on patch Tuesdays since then, there were no problems searching for and downloading/installing the most recent updates including some that were "off schedule".
