A friend of mine assembled a pc. Its a Dual Core, with am Asus P5VDC-X mobo, and two 512mb of Corsair ram that matches the model that Asus recommends on his page for this motherboard. When using Windows and trying to install things or copy stuff from dvd to pc, windows errors appears. After searching on the internet and founding nothing but people complaining about other problems, I though it was because of the ram and put down the clock speed of it but nothing change. Yesterday he realized that the errors only appear when using the dvd and that changing it to PIO mode make it work fine. But in PIO mode all works slow like everybody knows. So I don't know what to do. If someone have an opinion i'll appreciate it so much.

    Thanks, Emiliano

PS: Sorry for my english, I'm argentinian.

What do you mean by changing the RAM speed? Is the computer overclocked or is it running at stock speeds?

If you are overclocking any, set it back to stock and run memtest or something to test the RAM and make sure it is good. Here is a link to memtest http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=350

Good luck, be sure to post again if you fix it or need more help.

It was on stock speed and I down the speed a little (I had a similar problem on another pc and putting the speed of ram a little down of the stock solve the problem).
I already runned memtest for hours and nothing. I'm starting to hesitate if it's a memory problem, but nothing came to my mind.

Well, I am not an expert. But if you ran memtest for hours, the RAM should be good. If it were my computer, I would suspect the PSU next. Maybe it is a little underpowered. Also, make sure the CPU heatsink is mounted properly.

Sorry to give such general help stuff, but at this point, it is all I have.

Did you try to test a different dvd-rom station?
It could either be the mainboard which is giving you problems or the dvd-rom station, as that's the problem you solved by switching to PIO mode.
I'd try a different dvd-rom drive if you can and make sure you've got the most up to date drivers for your motherboard.

I change the dvd for a cd rom and the same problems remains. As Fred_G said, can it be a power problem? But it doesnt restarts it just give windows errors.

If you have a 40-pin cable connected to the DVD drive, it can cause problems. If so, you should change it to an 80-pin IDE cable.

    No, I have a 80-pin IDE cable. :(

Have you tried a new EIDE cable (from the drive to the mobo)? Sometimes a bad cable can give you fits. If you know the drive works in another computer, and the cable is good I would then suspect the mobo or the PSU.

I would also see if their are any updated drivers for the motherboard, drivers or a BIOS that addressed drive issues.

    Good luck.
