    Hi,

I am new to this site so please forgive if I do anything wrong. My problem is that yesterday I ran a virus scan on my laptop and had found several "threats", which I removed. After the scans my laptop was unable to connect to my router. I have tried various ways to fix the problem, but none have worked so far. I am asking for any other suggestions as to how to fix this problem. Any help is appreciated, and if you have any questions please let me know.

    Thank you,
    Paul

    Welcome to the forum pfdj7

Just for clarification. Are you actually not able to connect to the router or does the internet just not work?

What exactly have you tried to this point?

I am not able to access the internet because I am unable to connect to my router. Here are some things I have tried:

    1. Going into My Network Places > Properties and then right clicking on Wireless Network Connection then clicking repair, and then it gets stuck on "renewing ip address"

    2. Going to run > cmd > ipconfig/renew and ipconfig/release. When i tried ipconfig/renew I got a message saying "An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Netowrk Connection : The RPC server is unavailable." ipconfig/release just gives me the message "IP Address for adapter Wireless Network Connection has already been released."

    3. I have gone to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259, as I have seen on other posts but that doesn't seem to be related to my problem.

That is all I can think of what I did at the moment, I have tried doing scans again and removing whatever "threats" were found, but that did nothing.

    Hi there,

when you log on to your router your computer is given an IP address by the DHCP function on the router.

look on the back of your router for a list of default settings
eg. IP number, admin name and password

then you can try plugging an ethernet cable directly in to the router,
and see if you get an ip address, if this still does not happen then open your network connections tab on your computer double click you LAN adapter
click properties and then double click the entry stating IPV4
depending on your version of windows it may be worded differently
but its IPV4 that you want.

on this new page you can add the IP number that you need.

when you looked at your router it may have had a default IP of 192.168.0.1
so if you were to give yourself an address it would be 192.168.0.10 for instance or 192.168.0.11 and so on.
    enter your ip
the subnet value will enter itself when you click on it, will most likely be
    255.255.255.0
ok, the default gateway is your routers ip number
and the dns you can give the routers IP number too

so you would have something like this

    IP 192.168.0.10
    subnet 255.255.255.0
    D/Gate 192.168.0.1

    DNS 192.168.0.1

dont worry about the extra dns entry leave it blank

click ok and apply and shut down the adapter tab/window

If the the router is on its original default IP scope and most are
then your computer should be able to contact the router

    Open CMD type IPCONFIG /ALL
if all is working you should find all the info you have just entered displayed
    before you.
this might well be enough to get you online

    open a browser and see.
IF you then type your router IP number into the URL bar
at the top of your browser it should bring up the login page for your router
allowing you access to all the settings.
this is where the fun starts
Let me know how you got on!!

Yes! Thank you thelaptopguru, I connected directly to my router using an ethernet cable and I could not find a default IP address or anything on the back of my router, so I made one up similar to this laptop's IP, and got the default gateway IP and DNS servers from this laptop as well. After putting those IP's into the non-working laptop, I had to do a restart and right after, I was able to connect to the internet. I'm going to toy around with it more and see if I am able to connect wirelessly again. I'll post results here. Thanks again!

    Well done!!

If it seems that the wireless will not work it may well be that DHCP is either switched off or somehow incorrectly configured, it should not be too difficult to work it out!
if you google your router you should be able to find out what all the default settings should be after a reset is performed.
If in fact DHCP is dead on the router you can always configure you wireless adapter manually the same way you did the LAN

    Happy hunting mate

Ps remember to change the default Admin Password and also the wireless login as these are quite often the same for older routers which would open you up to other people using your WI-FI and even locking you out!!

Its a shot in the dark but this could even be what happened to cause your problems!
