    Hey all

So my Sony Vaio Desktop (age 3) has been erratic when it comes to the internet. I have a cable modem service through comcast for my apartment, which we use a router for the three of us.

This has happened twice before but I've been able to solve it by restarting my computer over and over again. I will bring my computer back from Standby mode and I won't be able to sign on to AIM, IE or Mozilla. The internet is down right? Nope, I check the Local Area Network connection and it says its connected. I've tried unplugged everything, restarting over and over agian, but nothing. I played with it for an hour this morning and I couldn't get it to connect to the internet again

What I'm trying to understand here is the source of the problem -- could it be my modem, ethernet card, the cable modem, the cord? I just dont get how I've been able to recucitate it before and now it's rolling over and playing dead. Help me! Thanks.

Check and see if you are getting an IP address from the router. Ping the router and make sure it responds. If so, try pinging www.google.com or www.yahoo.com. If you don't get a successful ping, try bypassing the router. Log onto the router and see if it's getting an IP from your ISP.
