    I would just like someone to look over my logs to see if I have any problems and if there is anything that I can remove to speed up my laptop. Thanks.

    and... also, how do I got about removing GetRunKey and ShowNew now that I have used them for the purposes they were needed for? Do I just delete the folder they were installed in as I do not see them in Add/Remove. Thanks for the assistance.

    Please use windows explorer to delete these:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Adam\Application Data\Viewpoint

    Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

    Now attach new logs for:

    * GetRunKey
    * ShowNew
    * HJT

    Be sure to tell us how things are running.

    Let's try it again:

    Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    After clicking fix, exit HJT.

    Post a new HJT log.
    Tell me how things are running.

    I ran HJT again, but those lines were not in the report this time. I'm not sure why they didn't delete the first time.

    The latest log is below.

    Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Is the HJT.exe, associated backup file and logs simply deleted or is there an uninstall procedure. Also, should the files that were unhidden, the recommended setting, be hid again or left as is?

    You can simply delete those files ...as to the hidden files...that is up to you ...if you wish to re-hide them, simply go to windows explorer / tools / folder options / view and uncheck show hidden files....:)

    In your opinion, do you recommend keeping them unhidden for spyware/virus cleaning purposes?

    Additionally, there are folders that I see in Program Files, for example, that are from programs that I have deleted in the past using Add/Remove, yet the some files and folders still exist. Is there any program that can search the computer for these and remove them or do I just have to do it manually?

    Under my admin account, I keep them unhidden. That way I can see what other users have been doing.

    As to the leftover folders....yes you can just delete them. Some may require that you delete the remnants that are still in the folder first. Then run CCleaner ( both the cleaner and the issues - making the backup when prompted). Also check in the tools section to see if any of them are still listed.

    Might you have any ideas or suggestions for why I receive pop-up notification for Reference memories areas, for example, from PCMservice, Rvscan, and Mediahub?
