Problems Installing Win XP Pro - BSOD

I am trying to replace my current OS (Win2K Pro) with Win XP Pro (SP3).

During the install process, after copying various files from the CD, the installation process gets to the point where it asks you to choose what partition you want to install the OS, but it does not show any partitons -- displays unknown. If I continue with the setup, I get the following error:
the problem seems to be caused by the following file: setupdd.sys
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
The computer I am trying to install this on has a Soyo SY-P4VTE motherboard with a Intel Pentium 4 3GHz, Via PT800 chipset, 1G of DDR memory, and 120G S-ATA HDD.

I tried to update the BIOS, but Soyo is no longer in business and their servers no longer exist. Every site that claims to have the latest drivers actually point back to the Soyo website for the download.

It appears to me that the S-ATA hard drive is not being seen by the Win XP installation program, but I had no problem when I installed Win2K.

There is a point during the installation process where it asks if you want to load third-party software. I am wondering if I need to get a driver for the S-ATA hdd. I read a post from 2005 from someone who appeared to have the same problem and solved it by using an 'SAS raid driver'. The post did not say where he found the driver. I have my original Soyo CD, but I don't know what driver I would need, if that is the problem.

My son suggested I add an IDE drive to the computer and install the OS on that drive. However, I feel that will result in unintended consequences. Does anyone out there have any suggestions or ideas to help me get around this problem?

    Sincerely,

Yes, that's exactly what is needed.
Hopefully a geek will come along and point you to the proper place to grab the SATA driver. (I don't have any SATA drives here so I've never run into the problem personally).

About 30 minutes after I posted my problem, I found website that had a zip file of updated drivers for my motherboard. Included were instructions on how to install XP using the included raid files, so I was able to install XP.

That was the good news. The bad news is I installed it as an additional OS, instead of installing it as an update to Win2K. So now I have two OSs on my computer. Now I am trying to figure out how to uninstall it.

According to what I read so far, you can only uninstall if you have installed it as an upgrade, which I did not. Guess I have to do more research.

    Read this thread http://www.petri.co.il/forums/showthread.php?t=6501
it might allow you to do what you want to do.

I have both windows 2000 and XP on my computer (master drive) and a linux install on the slave drive. Since linux is handling the bootup, I have not attempted to do any removal of either of the windows partitions. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". The only thing I did do was make sure that if I selected no OS to boot up, it would boot to my preferred one (windows 2k).

Thank you, Plodr, I will take a look at it.

In my case, I have XP and Win2K on the same partition. I real no-no, but when I realized what I did, I could not cancel the install. My wife always tells me, "Don't work on the problem when you are tired." Should have listened.

The setup has already caused a minor problem, Media Player under Win2K won't run, need to reinstall.

Thanks again for all of your help. I guess we can close this problem.
