Recently, I have run into problems opening up PDF files from online sites. These are trusted sites. I get the following error message

    Run time error!

    Program C:/ Program Files / Internet Explorer / iexplore.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application support team for more information.

The laptop I am using is a dell vostro 6000 and I am running internet explorer 7 on it.

    Any ideas?

When I had a problem like that, (I also received other messages,) I just switched from Adobe PDF Reader to Foxit Reader, and it worked. I'm suspicious my problem occurred when an Adobe update didn't install properly, but I didn't use IE to open PDFs for a long while after that, so something else may likely have caused it in the meantime.

Try uninstalling adobe reader and reinstalling it. Remember that when you open a file from a web browser, you're using your own installed program, not the web browser's.

Over the years I have noticed, and others smarter than I as well, that there are some PDFs that for some reason don't work quite right when opened by Acrobat.

Sometimes it is an embedded javascript in the PDF or some other attachment. Sometimes one can tweak the thing to get it open correctly with Acrobat, sometimes not. It is case by case, there doesn't appear to be a single cause.

Bottom line is that many just switch their default PDF reader to Foxit or Sumatra. Oft times these programs handle the PDF when Acrobat is less than wonderful.

In addition to Avrillavigne' excellent suggestion, have a read at:
http://www.adobepress.com/articles/article.asp?p=412914 for a decent overview of preference settings.

Among the settings I have tweaked are these:
In the section Setting Internet Settings Preferences I uncheck all of those options.
Under Javascript, I uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript.
Under Trust Manager, I disallow Opening of Non PDF Attachmnents With External Applications.
