hello guru's of computer technical knowhow....
    I recently purchased an ASUS p4s8x, into which i installed a p4 1.7ghz cpu into, and 256mb of ddr ram(2700/2100) pc333/266 184 pin dimm.
running winxp-home with a 40 and a 10 gig hd, as well as dvd and cdr-rw, and a 420w ps...
now the interesting part....it all works fine in the mobo i have now, but when using the asus mobo in this configuration, i get past the post, and everything is configured via the bios, now it recognizes the agp vid card as well....but once winxp starts trying to load.....hmmmmm
a very quick blue screen of death, then it reboots itself, (not enuf time to read the type of error or anything)
Could this be memory related? ie-wrong type of memory installed(pc333) or is there a bigger issue going on here.....i am frustrated trying to figure it out....
thanks for any advice you can give me....

P.S. the hd's are both formatted NTFS, if that makes any difference or not///

The blue screen of death usually has specific numbers and, if your lucky, a driver name that is causing the problems. They can be a bit difficult to diagnose, but not impossible. Basically, the blue screen is telling you there is a hardware problem (incompatibility) or a driver issue. No, FAT or NTFS does not make a difference, but NTFS is better. Overheated chips, bad ram or hard drive problems are the 3 most common problems that cause this. Let us know the error and we can check into it, or search the Microsoft knowledge base. This can be faster then diagnosing all your hardware. Try hitting the pause screen to stop it and read the message. The error your looking for should be something like "Stop 0X00000000A or IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL". FYI, that is a very common error message and probably the one you dont want, unless it has a specific driver name, in which case, you can use that driver name to discover the problem. Otherwise, you will need to swap hardware, check temperatures until it goes away.

    Let us know!

thanks for your reply, I have updated the cmos, to 1005, and it still is not working....

the baffling thing is the cpu report in the cmos-reports that it is running in an unsafe mode or something, therefore the computer reboots in safe-mode via cmos to reconfigure it...

    specs:

    ASUS P4S8x mobo (zif-socket 478)

    e-geforce 5200 AGP(128 meg version)

intel p4 1.7ghz (intel cpu report says it is operating fine)

maxtor 40gig HD-and maxtor 20 gig ide drives
    cd-rw and dvd +rw drives
    512 megs of ddr ram(pc2700)

when i try to boot, this is what happens
computer powers up fine, get the asus splash screen, and the post is all fine to this point
then it starts to load winxp-home, and it switches to BSOD, quickly i add, and restarts the computer....no time to press pause or even try to read what it says
then it autoboots back to cmos and says the cpu settings are incorrect or something
thanks for any ideas guys, as i am still stumped

hey skitz, i've had that problem with my asus board and several other boards from different manufacturers. The thing that's always worked for me is turning off BIOS Shadowing or Caching, Video Bios Shadowing, and anything in bios that you see that has to do with shadowing of some type of bios or cache or anything. give it a try.

i'll try that ironsnipe.....i've tried all else, so couldnt hurt to try at least one more thing....

could it be the willamette cpu as opposed to the other socket 478 type of cpu?

I doubt that could be the problem. The turning off the cache thing usually works in this area tho. It's weird the think that shadowing would have that effect but it does for some odd reason.
