Problems with ggf.exe

Have finished the 7-step self exam process. ggf.exe still lives. User experience suggests that ggf.exe is a google search redirector. I never get the website I select from the google return list. I'm redirected to someplace else.

Logs attached (will require 2 posts). Could not get a Counterspy log - never found the user path to create the log. Activescan found no errors & did not produce a log file.

Info that may be useful or interesting. Nearly impossible to run hijackthis, even under the assumed name of AnalyzeThis. Some process is recognizing the existence of HJT & killing it - FAST! I am lucky to have the log I created, but I'm not sure if it is complete.

    Thanks for your help

Please use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 8
    ReMoveIt Pro

    Reboot and install:
    Java Runtime 6

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    After clicking fix, exit HJT.

Please copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    * Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:

    * Now click the 'Done' button.
    * Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    * You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt

    Please attach new logs for:
    ShowNEw
    GetRun
    HJT
    Avenger

Hmm - no reference to RemoveIt Pro in Add/Remove Pgms. I had removed it earlier thru a Start Menu listing.

Ran instructions as directed. Logs attached. I don't think you'll like the results of Avenger.

    Thanks for your assistance.

    download - Pocket KillBox

Make sure you disable any anti-virus and anti-spyware real time protection programs that you may have running.

Run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:

    * Delete on Reboot
    * then Click on the All Files button.*(or on the folders option)*
    * Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):
    * Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    * Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.

If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

    Attach the log.

so nothing kills these 2 files: ggf.exe and ggf.1002.dll

I did some digging on windows/systems32 since my last post & these files still live. I repeated the steps you suggested in Safe Mode. Still the files live!

RunKey & NewFile logs are attached.

An update of my progress. Even though the 2 GGF files listed were not removed from the system, the steps we took seemed to have emasculated those files. Internet browsing returned to normal and expected behavior. Zonealarm never reported that ggf.exe was requesting access to the internet. The task manager did not list ggf.exe as a running process.

The next step I took was to use drweb-cureit to scan the windows/system32 directory. As expected, it found the 2 ggf files with the 'Gamania' virus. I let drweb-cureit delete the files. I also searched the registry for any references to ggf.exe and removed those entries. I rebooted the machine.

At the moment (I'm a little hesitant to claim complete victory) there is no evidence I can find to confirm that these ggf files are still on my system, except for Pocket Killbox backups. For your review I have attached runkey and newfile logs.

    Things are looking alot better.
    Let's try running avenger again.

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

    Attach the log.

I edited the Avenger script to read like this:

    Files to delete:
    C:\Windows\gf1002.cnf
    C:\Windows\gf1002.cnf2
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\iinaiefo
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\is10506.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\isysdrv4.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\isysdrv7.exe

Ran Avenger again. Progress to report. Logs attached.

Reviewing this path thru WinExplorer 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\iinaiefo' displays iinaiefo as a directory. Seems like I should rerun avenger with an edited script - but I don't know what this directory is. Waiting for your direction.

    Thanks for the help.

Sweet ...Your logs look clean. You may uninstall any programs we had you download (including CounterSpy, etc).

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
    * Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    7. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    8. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
    * go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
    * Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    9. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
