I'm having problems with my HP w2207 monitor. The problems started when I noticed a few days ago that I was having major ghosting problems - there is a ghost image of everything on my monitor about 1/4 of an inch to the right. For instance, wherever the mouse pointer is on the screen, there is a second, shadowy mouse pointer right next to it. Although this problem is annoying, I'm willing to live with for now, and it's not the problem I looking for help with.

The problem I'm looking for help with started when I tried to adjust my monitor to reduce or eliminate the ghosting. I pushed the Menu button on the monitor and started goofing around with the settings to try to reduce the ghosting. I didn't have any success, and I actually screwed things up more. Now the entire view on the monitor has shifted down by about 1/4 of an inch. I have a black band of dead space at the top of the monitor, and the task bar extends down below the bottom edge of the monitor.

I went back into the Menu area on the monitor, and nothing there seems to affect the location of the display area. I've gone into the "Image Control" area and then the "Vertical Position" setting. Once in that area, using the "+" button will move the display area up approximately 1 millimeter and no further.

I tried using the "Auto" adjustment button, but that doesn't help. I also tried the "Factory Reset" function and that doesn't help.

By the way, I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit. Next I went into Control Panel, then Device Manager, then selected the monitor and deleted the driver, which was an HP driver. I then restarted the computer and Windows downloaded and installed a generic monitor driver. This had no effect - I still had the 1/4-inch of dead black space at the top of the monitor.

I then downloaded and installed the most recent HP driver for the monitor. Again, no change - there's still a 1/4-inch black bar of dead space at the top of the monitor, the desktop area extends down past the bottom of the monitor, and none of the monitor controls seem to be able move the display area up.

I also downloaded and installed "HP My Display", and went through the monitor adjustment steps in that program, and again no change. The vertical adjustment will only move the display area up or down by about 1 millimeter. The horizontal adjustment, on the other hand, seems to be able to move move the display area about 1/4-inch in either direction.

In the task bar there is an icon for Intel Graphic Media Accelerator Driver. When I click on that and open it, I can then go to Display Settings and then Advanced Settings, and then four arrows show up for position adjustment. Clicking on the Up arrow does nothing.

Can anybody help me, or is it time for a new monitor?

Sorry to say this, but LCD's are just as notorious for leaving latent images on them, as CRT's are. Only way to fix, is to do a complete wash of a White slide on the screen for a day. Best thing also to do is to turn down backlighting and to calibrate the montior, vs. leaving the RGB settings at 100%, same with Contrast and brightness at their out of the box/showroom settings.

A new problem has sprung up. Now, about every 1.5 seconds the screen is "blinking". It doesn't go blank, but there's a momentary change in the brightness. Very annoying.

I connected the HP monitor to my laptop, and wow what a difference. The display is crystal clear and fills the entire monitor screen.

Based on my wife's online research, I now believe that the problem my be with my video or graphics card. Is there anyway to test that or reset it?

Sounds like your monitor's inverter circuitboard is dying. Time to get a new one.

Update - Problem Solved. When I disconnected the monitor from the desktop PC to hook it up to my laptop, I forgot to shut down the desktop. When I hooked the monitor back up to the desktop, the computer restarted on its own, and when it came back on the monitor was working correctly. The display is very clear now, it goes all the way to the top of the screen, and the ghosting is even gone. I would say that it was a bad or loose connection, but the plug connecting the monitor to the desktop is the type with the screws to hold it in place, and it seemed like it was fully and tightly connected. Anyway, I'm not sure what the problem was, but it's gone for now.
