    Hi all,

Iḿ hoping someone can help as Iḿ very new to Linux.

I've recently done an install of RedHat linux hoping it would co-exist with WindowsXP. One of the problems I'm having is that I had to move my Windows disk after the installation and now the Grub bootloader won't start Windows.

I've edited the lilo.conf.anaconda file so the Windows line points to the right place and I get an error: NTDLR not found. Anybody have any ideas on what I can do, barring a full reinstall of Linux.

My Windows copy is due for a reinstall anyway, so that wouldn't be a problem, depending on whether or not it would then overwrite the Grub bootloader.

On a second note, I can't get Linux to recognise that I have a second monitor connected, but that's not as important. :)

    Somebody please help :)

    Thanks,

    Rex

does it get to the Windows boot up screen? does it appear that it was booting windows or is it a GRUB error?

    Definately a Grub error.

I can now boot into Windows by changing the boot disk in the BIOS but that's a bit tedious to do each time.

umm...i'm a linux noob but i'm dual booting RH 9 with XP and it works great. so here goes: did you setup space specifically for linux?

i have a 40 gb hard drive, so I setup a 30g for XP and left the rest for RH 9. i installed XP on its partition, then installed RH on the empty partition.

I want to know if I can install Windows XP after RH9.

My problems started because I had to connect my Windows disk to my RAID card in order to connect one of the CD drived to the mobo 'cos my RAID card isn't bootable. Now I've swapped them back, the bootloader couldn't find the Windows disk.

I think I've edited the conf file correctly but it still isn't loading Windows.

    Sorry, didn't answer your question!

I've got an 80GB disk with Windows on a 5GB partition and the rest of my Windows stuff on the 75GB partition. I've also got a 40GB disk with 20GB given over to RH. I let RH set that up how it liked. I also have a 60GB disk with films & whatnot on. I've got 2 CD writers which is why I needed to juggle them around to boot off a CD drive.

Hmm, whenever I install linux I always make sure I install WinXP before linux, whether it be mandrake, debian, red hate, etc.. Windows can be very picky as to which OS it coincides with.

The best way to boot into a linux partion, the most safe way, is to create a boot disk and boot into linux that way. It's the safest way to do it.

You can install Windows after Linux, it will write over your boot loader (there is some option for it not to but I have long forgotten it :() and you will have to boot with a boot disk, windows is a bi*ch in that it has to be the first partition (unless it's logical I think) on the HDD, it also has to be the first partition on the master HDD, so during install on people's computers who have windows on a slave partition I just switch my BIOS settings for the install. Always have a back up boot disk, I use gag (gag.sf.net) it's a VERY nice boot loader, can boot from floppy/HDD, can boot sooo many OSes and can set passwords (don't you just hate you your parents booting into the wrong OS and forcefully rebooting it? *sighs*)
