Spy Sweeper keeps alerting me that it has detected changes to Internet Explorer's default pages, such as the Search page. The alert page pops up about every few seconds and I have to select restore. It is so annoying...does it mean I am still infected? Mariah

Hmmm! I have seen problems like this before. Sometimes there is a hijacker still there and other times it appeared to be a problem or conflict between SpySweeper, SpyBot protections and SpywareBlaster protections.

Please uninstall disable all protections from these programs and reboot. Then post a new HJT log. I have to see what the hijack is doing so we can fix it. We may have to uninstall those programs temporarily if this does not work.

I disabled all protections from SpywareBlaster but didn't find the options to do that for Spysweeper and SpyBot...how do i do that? I can uninstall them if you think I should. Also, if I don't restore my search page when Sweeper alerts me, my page gets hijacked and a lot of icons appear on my desk top. Mariah

What version of SpySweeper do you have? There is an Options, Active Shields selection from what I remember. See if you can find that. Otherwise uninstall it.

Run SpyBot and get into the Advanced mode by selecting Mode and then Advanced mode. Then select Tools, IE tweaks and disable (uncheck) all the Miscellaneous locks.

It may be necessary to uninstall all of these. But at anyrate, yes I know it will hijack your home page. I did not know about the icons on your Desktop though. How many are we talking about and what do they say and what are they for (right click on them and get properties?

We may need to allow this so we can see the what and where the hijacker is hiding?

Once you do this I need a HJT log while the problem is showing.

OK, so now I'm excited....I disabled all protections from the spyware programs and my homepage is not being hijacked. Could it be you really got rid of that awful scum I had? Do you still want a log? Which programs do I need to enable again? Mariah

Remember what I said back in message # 53

"Hmmm! I have seen problems like this before. Sometimes there is a hijacker still there and other times it appeared to be a problem or conflict between SpySweeper, SpyBot protections and SpywareBlaster protections. "

Try reinstalling or renabling (whatever is necessary) each application one at a time. And make sure the problem does not reoccur.

I would think that you are okay now. If no problems show up, you are all fixed up! Then refer to the following to reduce the chances of future problems: How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Chaslang,
I re-enabled the programs starting with Sweeper and got an alert about my homepage. I re-enabled the other two programs and now everything is working perfectly! No more alerts and my homepage is not being hijacked. Thank you so much for sticking with me through all this....I appreciate your assistance and admire what you do to help people.
