Allright guys, here is my problem, and i hope you guys can help me....

    I have a toshiba satellia M40X laptop... Couple of weeks ago, it all of a sudden realy slowed down... The movies were laggin, and surfin the internet was taking forever and everything was slow, so i decided to format it... But even right after the reformatting, the laptop didn't go back to it's regular speed... it's so bad that the online flash games lag, and i've been playin those games since i got the laptop and they never lagged... Anyways i've been trying to fix the slow problem but yesterday i got the blue screen when i was surfing the internet.. it said;

    Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
NMI : Parity check / Memory Parity Check
    ***The system has halted***

Then i just restarted the computer and kept surfing the internet then i got the screen again, but when i restarted this time, the laptop was makin weird noises and the screen never came up, so i restarted again and it worked...
I did a google search and i ended up finding the windows diagnostics tool, and i did a scan with it and no errors were found...

I cleaned my laptop's fan so it's not overheating or anthing although it was until last week when i decided to vacuum clean the fan...

I've done every single spyware and virus scan... so i don't think the computer is infected...

Basically i'm a university student and i need to go back to school in a couple of days and i need to fix my laptop for my studies... and i can't buy a new one right now... I'd be so glad if you guys could help me out...

    Thanks alot guys...

i dont know how to take the memory card out... i'm assuming i'll need to take the laptop apart, but i'm too scared to do that....

The toshiba i have is Satellite M40X - RS100E... The link u gave me doesn't have my model... But toshiba.ca has the model and i couldn't find a memory tester for it... I searched the whole site... i'll keep tryin to find the memory tester...

Also maybe someone can give me a link on how to take this badboy apart to reseat the memory card

Unless you are out of warranty, do NOT open up the laptop case--get it fixed under warranty. Opening a laptop up can void the warranty.

yeah the laptop is out of warranty... and right now i'm taking it apart, i'm posting from my dad's laptop... i dunno where the memory is, but i'm takin it apart anyways... see if i can find it...

by the way here's the details of my laptop... i couldn't find a dissambly guide for this laptop...

Laptop ram sticks are smaller than they are on a PC, and fatter, usually.

On my powerbook, its laying on its side...so look for that too.

yeah i found the ram stick... it was waaay inside the laptop, i took it out, blew on it... and reseated it...

the laptop is still slow as hell... but maybe i won't see the blue screen anymore...
does anyone have any other ideas on fixing this slowness

i just got the blue screen again... but this time i've noticed something...

The blue screen shows up when i turn the IE7 off.. when i have like 6 tabs, IE7 sucks the life out of the the laptop... lookin at the task manager, when i click on a link it uses 70-99%... I dont know abuot the first blue screen but the last 2 blue screens happened just when i closed IE7...

Now i'm using the explorer "opera"... The laptop is faster but i don't know if this is the old speed..

Anyone have any idea on this IE7 issue and the blue screen?

I'm gonna unistall IE7 right after i post the reply... just in case

is this different than the windows memory diagnostic tool? cuz i ran that one like 5 times and no errors were found...

Also if it's necessary, i will run this one that u suggested all night long tonite... see if that finds any errors...

i don't have the funds to buy a stick of ram right now, so i wanna make sure it is the problem before i replace it...

And on the toshiba website, for my laptop it says this:

    2 RAM slots, 1 occupied (Not an User Accessible Slot) with 512MB PC2700 DDR; 1 open slot on the bottom of the computer can be filled with 128MB, 256MB, 512MB or 1GB PC2700 DDR (1536MB Max = 512MB x 1 + 1024MB x 1)"

i was wondering if i could buy a 1gig ram and just put it in the slot under the laptop and disable this old one... because that one is so hard to reach, i have to really take the laptop apart and it could get dangerous (once i broke my ps2 when i opened it, fixed it after like 12 hours of working on it)...

Also what did ppl mean by reseating the memory... i just took it out, blew on it and put it back in... was that the right thing to do?

Also one questioon about the memory sticks... what difference does it make with the PC2700 code? do i have to get that one, and the Mhz thing... i think the one in mine is 333 MHz, do i have to get one like that, or can i get other ones, and also is the higher MHz better or the lower?

    Thanks for the replies...

Do as Adrynalyne suggested and run an extensive memory test from the link he gave you and if it has gone to meet its maker and money is tight have a look here ......

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/512mb-Pc-2700...6QQihZ017QQcategoryZ80201QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem...

there are others, PC 2700 300Mhtz as that is what you will need. Make sure when you look that the stick/sticks are for a ''Laptop''. And yes if the one you have is now defunct... replace. Also reseating means to take the RAM out and Replace so you have tried that.

Before doing that... Take the RAM out a clean the gold strip with a clean eraser or rubber - Blowing on the RAM will NOT clean it... Just rub the eraser up and down the gold strip/s until you cant see char like marks vertical along the gold strips at the bottom of the RAM - Then keep "rubbing" - So to speak - until the eraser crumbs left behind are white - Then re-run memtest if you have already done so

An Average stick of SO-DIMM PC 2700 Goes for about $80AU

Relatively easy to install as you have already done so...

    BUT

    The problem may not be RAM related - {Geez all you guys hear is BLUESCREEN and immediately blame the RAM}

Do you own a device that has no WHQL signed drivers - that can also cause problems like this

Allright guys, last night i ran the test that Adrynalyne suggested ...

I ran the test for 9 hours, it did 28 passes but it found no errors... There was no errors... So i dont know if this is ram related or could it still be...

Before i do anything else, i'll wait for your replies on this test findin no errors...

Just a thought here. I worked on a very slow and unstable laptop once and it turned out that someone had compressed the HardDrive. I uncompressed it and defraged it and it almost tripled the performance of the computer and eliminated the blue screen errors.

To check if its compressed open My Computer and right click on the "C" drive and see if the box at the bottom of the window marked "Compress drive to save disk space" is checked. It should not be checked.

To the original poster, do you have any .dmp files in your C:\windows\minidump folder?

Ok, right click My computer, go to properties, click on the advnaced tab, then go to Startup and Recovery Settings.

Make sure its setup like this:

The idea is to catch the memory dump to troubleshoot it. If the crash happens extremely early on though, then it won't happen.

ok i have set up the settings like u have posted.... i guess there will be the minidump thing the next time i see the blue screen right?

thnx to all of you for your continuing help...

So long as the system has time to log the dump, then yes.
