My problem is I have installed a new second hard drive Maxtor 200GB-7200 RPM Ultra ATA/133
Used the same IDE cable that is connected to the Main Master Hard drive (Grey middle connector) - Pluged the power cord in.
I think I am going to replace the cable with the one that came with the new drive tho.

Left the jumpers set on factory default -Cable Select
Installed the Software that came with it to format it, which said it was formated and is set to go.
rebooted and looked to see if it was there which it was.
    Shows up as ...........DISK2_VoL1(G:)

    Other Drives are as follows
    Floppy(A:)
    Presario(C:)
    Presario_RP(D:)
    CD-RW(E:)
    DVD-RW(F:)
    DISK2_VoL1(G:)

But when I try to open it, it says
G:\System Volume Information Is not accessible
    Access is denied

I run Windows XP Home Edition
    Compaq Presario
    2000+ 1.67GHZ AMD Athlon tm-XP Processor
256 MB DDR SDRAM Memory (2 sticks)
40 GB Ultra DMA hard Drive
32MB DDR SDRAM Integragated ProSavageDDR Graphics with up to 32MB shared video memory

I want to later partion the new drive and use one half for storage and the other for programs.
I want to keep window on the original C hard drive and later reformat it.
Please help, I knew I would not get this without a problem......

Maybe you should format it with xp and try.

    Harley Girl,

It sounds like you followed the installation directions that came with your drive. I have a few questions.

    1. Have you ever installed a new hard drive before?
    2. Are you familiar with the disk management tool?

I am uncertain if WinXP Home Edition has the tool. You can launch it by typing diskmgmt.msc in the run command (start > run) and pressing enter. Here you will be able to reformat your hard drive using the windows native software.

The disk management tool has a great help file. Look for the topics "Manage new disks" and "Format a basic volume".
