Problems with processor heat

For a while now, I couldn't even use my computer.. I'd turn it on, and within 5 minutes it would reboot and wouldn't start again.

I messed around with the fan, got it to work for a while, then problems started again..

I bought a new fan to replace my old one for the processor, turned it on, and it shut off right away.

When I first got this comp up & running, it ran fine... at the 1.7 gigs it was supposed to. Ran for about a month before problems started.

Anyway, now I changed the processor speed or something like that in bios from 133mhz to 100mhz, and now it's working again.. but the processor is running at 1.2gigs instead of 1.7.

Before I updated my computer, my processor always ran at 1.3 gigs... when I tried to change it to 1.7, the comp just blacked out, so I settled with that for a couple of years.

When I updated it, I changed the RAM (old was faulty, I think), mobo, power supply, case, upgraded to windows XP, and new vid card.

Any ideas on what I can do to get it to run at normal speed and actually work? Thanks.

Could you please tell us some more information on the computer? This way we could further address your problem

    i.e

Processor (Brand, ie Pentium III 1Ghz, or AMD XP1700+)
    Motherboard specs
Memory (how much, and what speed i.e. PC133 PC 2100?)
    Power supply
and other components in your system.

Some motherboards dont like you to use certain fan plug terminals. In other words check your manual and see if it says not to use fan terminal no.3
Though this may not be a fan problem at all. Try this as well.... set your mobo back to the 133 speed but non overclocked and take out all but 1 stick of memory and see if it still acts up...Also you say probs with processor heat but you didn't give us any temperture specs on it. Depending on what mobo you use in the bios it should tell you what your processor temps are. And yes we need more info please. Let me know what happens and good luck...

Since you already replaced the fan, and I'm assuming the new fan is functioning correctly I would try reseating the heatsink. Make sure you have an appropriate quantity of thermal paste on the die and whatnot. Since you replaced the MB I wouldn't imagine that its the problem either. Although I had similar problems on a friends computer that ended up being a faulty MB (and ECS which are mostly junk anyhow).

The new fan came with new heatsink & paste, so that's changed too.

My processor is AMD Athlon XP 2000+

My mobo is Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

    512 RAM, 1 Stick

Thermaltake Silent Purepower PSU (Reading it off the PSU itself, got my case open)

In BIOS, off fresh startup my mobo started at 24 degrees celcius and processor started at 39 degrees celcius.

After a while, processor ended up at 57 degrees celcius and mobo at 27 degrees celcius.. they seemed to be staying there.

definitely make sure that the cpu fan's power connector is in the right one. the mother board usually says something like CPU_FAN for the cpu and SYS_FAN for the northbridge fan. Make sure you put thermal paste on the core and when you put the fan on make sure by looking at the motherboard sideways that the fan is pressing down on teh core and not cockeyed like it's sitting on the bump of the socket. Also make sure you have at least one exhaust case fan that is blowing air out of the case near the back of the computer. The fan in the power supply doesn't count. It doesn't move enough air to matter.

Well mine runs way hotter than that and I have no shutdown problems whatsoever.(rock solid stable) Granted yours could be a bit cooler but those processors are known to run a bit on the warm side and I really dont think that is the problem. Unless your mobo is set up to shut it down at that temp. Again make sure your cmos settings are correct and try a different memory stick if it only has one...Just for the hell of it

The only other thing I can think of would be a faulty PSU...But that is a guess...

what type of heat sink and fan are you using. i know some of those stock amd coolers a POS. it's wise to invest in a decent cooler. helps with system stability

The new fan I got is CompUSA fan, Coper Pro Gaming Fan... it says up to 2.2 gigs.

I used to have a second fan, but I couldn't get it to fit in my new case... maybe i'll try putting that thing back on.

Definitely invest in exhaust fans. I added 4 to my comp (drilled the holes my self)... Before that my CPU ran at around 135 F~, now its down to 110~.

If your temps are accurate 57c isn't bad for your processor, although I'm assuming thats at the reduced speed. At full speed those numbers would be higher, but I doubt they are getting so high as to cause a shutdown.

The recommendation by someone else to try a different stick of memory is a good one. I have seen memory that has problems cause computers to shutdown at higher FSB's.

Well the reason I replaced my RAM is because my old RAM was supposedly faulty... I ran that "memtest" thing I found online and it told me my RAM was bad.

My old stick was a Crucial 512 stick, and so is my new one.. but my new one is ermm... forget what they call that.. like more memory or something..

On my old comp, my processor only ever ran at 1.3 gigs.. whenever I tried to set it to 1.7 which it should have been, screen just went black and I had to reboot and change back to 1.3.

Yeah, btw, the 57c is at the reduced speed.

Hrm, try reseating the processor on the socket and reattach the heatsink. Make sure the groove lines up with the hump where it says socket A. Also while your in there look for blown capacitor's and the such. i Think your board is f-ing you up.

It's been working fine at 100 mhz/1.2 gigs.. at 58 degrees celcius.

I put in my side fan, but it isn't blowing out too much air.. only a little bit.. Fan might be crappy.

I set it back to 133 mhz, it started running at 65 degrees celcius and refused to turn on.. I think I'm gonna get a new side fan and try that..
