I got hasty and disabled the wrong RPC service (I think)and now cannot get my Windows XP PC to allow me to access the "properties" to re-enable it. None of the files there (in services.msc) will allow me to open the properties window.

I followed the procedures listed in your "read this first" link and when I did not get rid of the browser hijacker I went back and got a little too radical in my frustration (I know, I know, but my wife is a medical transcriptionist and was breathing down my neck to get the machine running so she could sent a transcribed document to the clinic via E-mail...so it is her fault, ya see?)

How do I get my machine to respond again...wake-up page does not display the "start bar" and obviously I cannot log on. How to I re-enable the RPC?

    Thanks!

    billg,

I found this on our board and is posted by a experienced member

Remote Procedure Call (RPC) is critical for Windows XP to work. You can try to enable it using the registry editor (If not in normal mode, then in safe mode) Look here:

    http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/service/regedit.html

Note the service Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator (Notice "Locator") isn't critical.

Good luck and let us know.

Hi I'm having the same problem with services.msc. with the RPC I did everything you mentioned in this article and I'm still not having luck. I have started my system in safe mode and went through the regedit commands and when I went to Local System/Current Control Set/Services/RPCSS/ and double clicked on Start it showed the number as already being on 2. When I look at the RPC from the services.msc window it shows disabled. And I can't open up the properties window. Please Help! This is my first time posting and I'm still new so please let me know if there is something I missed. Thanks guys!

    Geoff
