for some reason, when i try to shut down my laptop, it either won't shut down or it will restart by itself. it even has shown the WINDOWS XP start up screen (i have vista ????). then it does the whole "windows did not shut down properly" yadda yadda, and asks me if i want to restart in safe mode. after experiencing this problem multiple times, i can no longer open AIM or WMP and i have no idea what to do. can someone plz help me?

Apparently XP is/was installed because the XP startup screen will not come up otherwise.
Suppose you explain if the computer is new or used and tell us the brand and model.

Actually, i bought the computer "supposedly" brand new from walmarts online store. It's an Acer Aspire 6920, and it had Vista on it when i got it. My only guess is that maybe they had XP on it originally, then changed it to vista to meet my specific product description.

No, the computer comes from Acer with Vista. My guess is that someone might have tried to install XP and couldn't get it working because there were no drivers so they did a hasty repair and returned the computer.

Look through the material that came with the computer to see how to make a Vista recovery CD or DVD. You will want to burn one then use this CD/DVD to get your computer back to factory condition.

    I found this
But I'm not sure it will work on your computer.

Before you try it, please get all your important files off the computer in case it reverts back to when it came out of the factory.

    From here http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/fo....com&siteid=7117&areaid=2&formid=3425#results
you probably want the eRecovery Management Guide

i actually found that if i used a restore point, things worked perfectly again (as far as the programs that weren't working). But as soon as i installed avast home, they stopped working again
