Personally, I think CPU's are a matter of preference and personal experience. I've had good results from both processors. My home PC runs an Athlon 64 3200+ and it performs perfectly; it's FAST, never overheats (steady 46c at full load, 39c-41c at idle) and I like it alot. Alot of gamers swear by AMD (I think it's because AMD's tend to be easier to overclock). But Intel is known for rock solid, long term steadyness... Also, you can find benchmarks all over the 'net that 'prove' this one is faster or that one is better; it's very subjective. Just think about what the PC's primary use will be (games, surfing, office/student type work) and see if the specs will provide the performance needed. That's about all I can say. I hope it helps. ;)

For a student doing rare gaming and the basics on the notebook would the http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Spec...6/rpem/ccd/productDetailSpecification.do#tabs be ok?

Yeah! Looks like a pretty decent rig. I'm surprised to see it has 2gb RAM- it's a good thing! Should be a decent gamer too.... good choice.

It is for my brother. I have an IBM T42 and love it, but he wants an HP or Sony. I figured for the price it cannot be beat.

Well....now things have changed! If you're comparing HP to Sony, it's like comparing a Yugo (remember those) to a Rolls Royce. Go for the Sony! MUCH higher quality control in the Sony factory, better parts overall, longer life span. Now, this is my personal experience with laptops based on which brands I see more often for repairs: I almost NEVER see Sony's, and when I do, it's the older ones. I see HP's all the time and the problem if often a serious hardware issue. This could be because HP sells WAY more laptops than Sony, but the ratio still seems off. Go with Sony. Much better electronics all the way around; take a look at Toshiba too: GREAT laptops!
