Product Key Issue

I have a legal CD of Win2000, and its sticker on the side of the computer containing the product code. The problem is that the key code is not being recognized by the Cd. I am looking to clean my system and do a fresh reinstall of my licienced product but cannot. Any advice?
Please note again that I legaly own this product and this is not a pirate.
What am I doing wrong, or does anyone know how to retreive my key from the registry before I proceed? The company that sold me the system say to bring it in to them, but I should be able to do this at home without having to take my system in.

 

Microsoft will give you a key if you tell them the number on the back of the CD, not the CD Case

 

Thanks. I have located the number on the back on the CD and it can be seen when you tilt the CD in the light. Is there a key finder tool to find the key on my hard drive. e.g registry?
