I posted this question at the end a long thread of an earlier post--don't think anyone saw it.

I have xp media center edition which currently has an invalid product ID. If I do a full restore to original factory settings, should my original ID repopulate? If so, would I be able to buy the upgrade version of Vista and install sucessfully? Or should I buy the full version and restore all my settings from back up?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi

Yes if you use the restore disk that originally came with your PC, it will be reverted back to factory settings, so then if your PC is capable of running Vista fine you'll be able to upgrade ( do search on Vista Upgrade version in the forum for a few crucial points to this version )

but to be honest, I'd most likely be buying the Full retail or OEM version of your chosen Vista Version ( but as you have Media Center now your likely to want to go with Vista Home Premium or Ultimate as they are the only two versions with Media Center built in ) and Clean Install over an upgrade... even tho you can do this via an upgrade disk at present, basically involves you installing Vista twice again their are instructions to this in the Interesting links part of this forum.

also run the Vista Upgrade Advisor app first on your PC to highlight any areas you may need to upgrade or find some updated drivers/software for.
