    Hello all

For the 2nd time, my user profile has changed automatically on my laptop. I am running an ACER laptop (Aspire 5057Z), Windows 7, Comodo firewall and AVG Free antivirus. I get auto-updates/installs from Microsoft. I have not recently uploaded any new software, and I regularly run antivirus and antispyware, and run CCleaner after every internet session prior to logging off. What happened was when I turned on the laptop and logged on, it reverts to a default profile setup, I lose my desktop background, most of my icons, and lose all my favorites in IE-8. My favorites are still there under my user folder, but they won't show up when IE-8 is opened. The first time this happened (about 2 weeks ago) I feared having a "bug" so ran the MajorGeeks cleaning programs and posted in the Antivirus forum - nothing found but the MajorGeeks noted from submitted logs that my profile was very messed up. After consulting with my IT guy at work, I created a new profile, copied over My favorites, My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, verified the new profile worked OK with all those things accessible, and deleted the old profile. I also created a profile for my wife. Everything has worked until this recent time, but only my profile got mixed up. My wife's profile appears to work normally (I copied all my favorites to hers so I can access things). Any idea what might be causing this, or how to fix it? What can I do to troubleshoot this issue? What other information do you need to assist in helping me figure out what is going on? Thank you very much for your guidance and help!

Stop doing that. FF can clean up after itself. Look under the Privacy section of Tools/Options.
I think all your cleaning is removing things you want to keep.

Try not running CCleaner for a week and see if the problem with your corrupted profile disappears.

    Hello Plodr

Thanks for the reply. Is "FF" Firefox? I am using IE-8, but can switch and delete IE if that could be a related issue. Is the "Privacy section of Tools/Options" you note referring to Firefox, IE, or Windows 7? Sorry for my ignorance - just wanting clarification. I have only used CCleaner per the recommended settings in the MajorGeeks guide, and have done that for years without any problems like this - it's surprising it would start causing problems now. But, I will create a new profile, move the "My" stuff over, set up my desktop again, delete the old profile, stop using CCleaner for a week and see if that helps maintain things. Perhaps I should change from IE-8 to Firefox also. Any other guidance please let me know - thanks again!

FF means Firefox, sorry for my shorthand.
Yes, the Privacy tab is found under Tools/Options in Firefox.

If you are on Windows 7, your version of IE should be 10 or 11, not 8. (I have v19 installed and v 11 hidden at the moment, though I never use IE to browse.)
