    Hey Everyone,
I am a computer novice and am having some difficulty with my laptop.
All of my programs(wordperfect and utility programs like system restore and disk defragmenter) are being opened by one program, powerpoint. This does not allow me to open these programs because powerpoint doesn't recognize their formats. Whenever I try to designate a program by using the OPEN WITH option, I have to pick one program, which ends up being assigned to all programs. I believe this may be happening because all of these files are designated as LNK files, resulting in the simultaneous switching.
This turns out to be frustrating because I can't use many of my programs.

I appreciate any help and apologize for my unfamiliarity with the computer terminology:)
    Thanks!!!

Thanks for tip, but unfortanetly I cannot open this file because windows can't recognize it. They offer me an option to look it up online, but no files can be found.
Any additional suggestions are much appreciated!!!!

Were you recently infected by a virus?

    Try:

Click START, then RUN, then type in cmd.exe (press enter). Does this bring up a command prompt?

    If not, try this:

Click START, then RUN, then type in: command.com (press enter).

If the later works, then type in:

    cd\windows\system32
    copy regedit.exe regedit.com
    exit

Quick question, where did you extract the above .zip file?

    I don't believe I was infected by a virus.

I am able to bring up the command prompt with your directions.

And the zip file was extracted to my temporary internet files.

Can you extract the .zip file to either your desktop or a new folder under the c:\ drive?

Either one, post the location here. :)

Forgot to mention this highly important part:

Welcome to MajorGeeks. We are here to help you. Either I or someone else, should be able to resolve your issue! :)

Which method were you able to get to the command prompt?

Did you successfully copy the regedit.exe file to regedit.com?

If so, CLICK START, then RUN, then type in:

    regedit.com %userprofile%\desktop\[folder you created/or file name]

    as in:

regedit.com %userprofile%\desktop\newfolder\xp_exe_fix.reg (note, this one will work, but you have to modify the "newfolder" to which ever folder you created)
    or
regedit.com %userprofile%\desktop\xp_exe_fix.reg (This will work, if you extracted to the desktop).

I was able to get the cmd prompt by entering cmd.exe. However, I am not exactly sure how to copy the regedit32.exe file to regedit32.com.

after ye bring up the command prompt, type in:

    cd\windows\system32
    copy regedit.exe regedit.com
    exit

I tried both command prompts ( the cmd.exe and the command.com)
, but it states it can't find the file specified.

Let me clarify. After I enter copy regedit.exe regedit.com, I get a response stating it can't find the file specified.

    Hrmmm.....

    Once you are within c:\windows\system32

try to copy regedt32.exe to regedt32.com

Then, if that worked, try again, the:

Out of curiosity, CLICK START, then RUN, then type in regedt32 (press enter).

Does the registry edtior show up?

Ok, first -- it worked with regedt32, but not regedit32 -- Is that correct?

2nd--I was able to copy regedt32.exe to regedt32.com. I then entered the info from post #8 into the run box. The reply was the following : "Cannot import C:\Documents: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

3rd- the registry editor does show up when i type in regedt32.
