I have just moved from XP to Windows 7. Thanks to the help I got from Majorgeeks users and others, the upgrade was painless. (Yes. I have backups of my data. I have 2 separate ones on removable hard drives. Items that I consider particularly critical are also stored online.)

As part of the upgrade I deleted all software. I did this because my old registry was a bit like a plate of eggs. Scrambled. I'll be loading new software as I require it, but suggestions are solicited. In this post I'm asking about information regarding anti-virus and anti-spyware programs; I'll make other posts if I need further help deciding what to use.

I have Kaspersky anti-virus. This was recommended by my computer vendor; but I'm open to other suggestions.

My internet is protected by a hardware firewall that is well configured. I don't know if I also want a software firewall; if so, what would be recommended?

I will download Malwarebytes antispyware. What other programs should I consider?

I use Firefox as my main browser. I have several addons (including Web of Trust) that assist in blocking attacks. What other issues should I address?

Any suggestions or helpful comments will be greatly appreciated.

    Joe

I have used Avast Internet Security for several years now and I am very satisfied with it. It isn't free, but it does the job to suit me. Recommended!

    Thanks for the reply.
I use both Malwarebytes and superantispyware, very effective.
Noscripts is something I'm just now trying out, it seems to work well.
Avast is another thing I'll need to try.

    I appreciate the help.

I also suggest using Avast for anti-virus. For malware, in addition to Malwarebytes I suggest using a program called Spyware Blaster:

I've used it for quite some time now, and I find it prevents a lot of net-nasties from getting on your system. Run and update Malwarebytes and Spyware Blaster once a week or so, and you should be pretty well protected.

Windows 7 has a pretty good firewall built into it, but it is not really good at outgoing traffic. I prefer using a different firewall . . . I like to know when something on my computer is trying to "phone home." I like Zone alarm; used it for years and have had few problems with it.

I know you are behind a hardware firewall, but I believe in being redundant . . . especially if you are part of a LAN. A hardware firewall is great, but then so was the nifty gate at the city of Troy. :-D Once something gets past the "gate", there is nothing to keep it contained. If every computer on your LAN has a software firewall, then at least the infection is contained on the original computer. They don't call 'em trojans for nothing . . . ;)
