    hi there,

just thought i would ask for some help as for a while now my pc is running very slow, i have checked for spyware etc and all seems clean.
i am running an athlon 3.4gh 939pin (i think thats the right one.. not the 700 one anyway) asus motherboard, 1 gig crucial memory, xp sp2 (all updated)

now i used to click on a programme, say unreal tournament, it would flicker quickly and be loaded, now it sits there and sits and sits for about 20 seconds before it loads.]
msn messeger is the same when i try to log but that hovers for so long that its like it has loaded.

i was looking at removing several programmes from the start up menu but havent got a clue which ones are needed safe to remove etc.

    please advise thanks

    Try these things:
    Defrag your hard drive.
Close any other running progs (duh(use ctrl alt del if you have to))
Download and run "Adaware"...this finds a lot of stuff that other ones miss
And, as for removing progs from the startup, here's how I do it:
-go to "run" in the start menu, and type "msconfig".
    -click the "startup" tab
-drag the "command" slider so that you can see the whole path
-use your discretion as to which ones are unwanted, for example, if it
    says: c:\program files\common files\AOL\anythingelse....GET RID OF IT
cause you know that you don't want any crap from AOL!! You get the
    picture.

hope this helps...i'm not exactly an expert ;)

Where in the users post does it give any indication they use AOL?

Also, deleting things at random from common files can be problematic, but you knew that, right?

uh...yea...but taking something off of startup is hardly the same as deleting it. AOL was an example of seeing something that you know isn't system critical. you knew that, right?

download pconpoint, it's cheap($37 forever) and it works wonders for me. after you use your computer for a while, "residual' files from deleted programs and such keep building, taking up memory space and causing errors. pconpoint seeks out and finds these problems and fixes them. the best utility i've found yet.

Hey, you can check ur startup list here and decide what to retain and what to uncheck.
    http://castlecops.com/StartupList.html.
Also run a disk cleanup, and defragment the drive as applications can load slow if the drive is cluttered with junk or fragged.
Make sure its not due to spyware, hope u have run updated scans with Adaware and APybot at the least.

totally agree most of the rigs i receive with problems have,or have had aol installed.
use adaware, spybot, there are loads of free startup programs available. which give a discription to help to decide which to remove.
