    OS Windows XP SP3
    AMD Athlon (tm) 64 Processor
    3000+
    1.80 GHz 2.00GB of RAM

    Hope someone can help!

The problem I am having and have had for some time now is:

I cannot figure out as its not just one program that I have a problem with but lots of them.

I cant use the automatic update link on most of my software programs (windows update is ok though) Also if Im on a site and I want to email them I click their contact link to automatically put the email address in my email but this doesnt work.

In both senarios all I get is a blank page that says connecting but it never does.

One program I do use and Im not sure if it caused it is the FREE Advanced Systemcare 3...which I cant click the auto update link either.

I havent a clue what to do, so any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks again..

    Fae a wee Wuman!!

    Welcome to MajorGeeks,

What firewall, antivirus programs and browser/version? Sounds like something is blocking or your security settings.

    I use:
    Windows Defender
    AVG Free Edition
    IE7

would a firewall block all links though?

    THanks for the reply

This is a specific built pc.

I dont think I have norton or McAfee, done a search and nothing came up except my router program folder had a nortonFw.bpi file in it, not sure if thats anything to do with it.

so you dont think Advanced SystemCare has anything to do with it?

You might be right on the Windows Defender as Im not sure how to use it..I have changed the schedule scan time to make sure its not conflicting with my virus scan schedule.

I'll need to find out more about windows defender - as there is nothing entered into the Allowed items or Quarantined items so there is something not working right. it has never asked me permissions either (should it).

Did you try a different browser?

Is there a firewall besides Windows and the one on your router?

What we're trying to get at, are there firewall(s) installed and if so what firewalls? Did you change any settings in the firewalls?

Try Method 2: Reset security settings for Internet Explorer 7 in link below.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936213

Then go to the below link and make section 6 changes after you have done the reset:

    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=44525

    6) Adjust Active X security settings

There is a setting that causes this behavior in IE if I recall right, been years since I had this issue and can't remember the fix. But could also be a another setting... maybe resetting will correct it.

To answer to your questions re firewall blocking some links but not all, yes they can depending on settings.

I see nothing in Adv Sys Care or Windows Defender that would cause your issue, haven't used AVG free in awhile but if it's just the basic antivirus it should not be blocking links.

Cat - should I upgrade to IE8 first - that might fix it?

Being stupid here - is Windows defender not a firewall? havent changed any settings in there but there isnt any communications coming from it, like allow, block etc

Firewalls are my weak area, new how to use zonealarm but was advised Windows defender was better?

If I shouldnt update to IE8 I will try the latest stuff you put up.

If it were me, I would not update the browser until I figured out what was wrong with the one I was using.
You really should have another browser on the computer like Firefox or Opera just to see if it is a problem with the browser, your computer, your router or something else.
I have at least two browsers on every computer. When I have a problem with a website, I try another browser to see if it is a problem on my end or the website end.

Windows defender is not a firewall http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Defender

Marie, no do not install IE8, as Plodr posted; you have to figure it out before you add more issues to the mix.

Install FireFox just in case you need it, it's easy to use and a good backup browser to have http://majorgeeks.com/Mozilla_Firefox_3_d2248.html

After you get a little familiar with FireFox, try my suggestion in Post #9

I done everything on your reply #9 still not working.

Im scared to use another browser!! but will try firefox for a while

I dont use a router it is on my pc but its for my son - I use the ethernet/cable modem.

I guess I dont have a firewall - I dont believe that!! Ive always made sure I had everything to protect my pc so think I should download one before I do anything.

will get back to you all again.

ok...Ive removed windows defender because I have Advanced SystemCare 3 doing exactly the same and more!

I have just downloads PC Tools firewall from the link on MG and its running at the moment - When I opened up PC Tools I clicked on the upgrade link and it worked in IE7 - Because of this I tried the upgrade link on AVG free - and - Update link on Advanced SystemCare 3 - This didnt work

I havent added firefox yet but thought you might find this interesting/strange....:confused

What version of AVG free are you running? If it is 7, do not try and upgrade to 8. If it is 8 do not try and upgrade to 8.5
Download 8.5 and do a repair install from the software you downloaded but only if you currently have v8 on your computer.
    http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
the left most download link is for 8.5 free.
