ok so my computer runs fine, for about 10 to 20 minutes then when i want to open new programs (including windows utilities like regedit) nothing happens. i can navigate to it from explorer or use the start menu or try it from the "Run" facility, but nothing works. the computer thinks for about 5-10 seconds then nothing. i've run avast, spybot s&d and ad-aware and it's still happening. the shut down, restart, hibernate etc do the same.i dont get any warning messages.
i think it's a registry thing, but i really don't know... got any ideas?
    i'm running XP Pro.

    Hi

If a registry thing, then its likely to be affecting you from the get go, as in your instance the issue starts after 10~20mins of PC usage, a few things may cause this....

    1. Malware and even running those security apps you may have something they have not picked up so to rule malware out its best to run through this guide. READ & RUN ME FIRST. Malware Removal Guide ( but if malware found, start a new thread in the malware forum )

also if you can hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and Processes, see what application is running most CPU % as this could be the culprit.

    2. Heat can cause this, so do you know what the CPU, Motherboard temps are of your PC, http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html < Everest Free can help with this, run this app and click on Computer > Sensor and just minimize the screen ( so you can get back to it without having to run it again ) then see what the temps are after 10-20mins of usage or at the time your PC gets slow.

Check the insides of your PC for loads of dust, especially around the CPU fan, if the fans are clogged up this creates heat and the PC can start to go slow or cause random errors/shutdowns.

ok so i'm going to go with the over heating option, simply because i know it overheats. my issue is now, what do i do about it. it's a laptop so not as accessible as a PC. i discovered this when i tried to open it up and check for dust and after pulling out all the screws there was still nothing open. a friend of mine suggested thermal paste could be the issue(or lack thereof) so i think i'll take it to my friend at the hp store downtown and get them to look at it. i hope it doesnt cost much!
thanks for your help.. i'll let you know what happens.
