programs running when turned of help needed.

gday all i have a problem with my computer im running windows 98, and when i use the interent and then try and shutdownafterwards . i get a message with the heading is ( connected to iprimus) which is my interent company i use>>>>
then there is a yellow triangle with a ( ! ) in it with the following messaged next to it. ( this program is not responding it may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped running) there is a bit more crap then at the bottom i get three option
WAIT END TASK CANCEL

i end task then a few moments later i get another message the same with no heading i end task again then after that i get another message saying EXPLORER illegal action etc, i ok that then finnaly i get the same message as the other 2 but with the heading ( animated BMP sequence) i get all these message in sequence when i use the interent and i try and shut down, if i never log on for howeva long im using the computer i get none of thoese messages and it shutsdown fine on most occasions.
hope that information will help, someone come up with a soloution. cheers
i have tried everything from registry cleaners, running 3 different virus scanners, adware, spybot, hijack this everything my computer is clean, howeva i think the problem started only after i had a few virus running on here for a few weeks, so maybe i need to repair something. anyway any help will be great thanks all

 

I note the gday and iprimus. Are you in OZ? Wherabouts? Are you dialling the national number? More info from you might be helpful. I'm using W98 and iprimus (bought out AOL in OZ). Bye the way welcome to Majorgeeks. Bazza

yeah mate oz boy here im i live in the east of melbourne, umm i dont know if i am using a national number, but i also dont think it makes a difference, it like i close the interent, howeva when i try and shutdown the message indicates that the interent is still running, and also indicates other programs are running, its like the sequence my computer is taking during shutdown is wrong, i can get it to shutdown eventually but it takes 5 mins of pressing end task, and waiting , instead of just 10 seconds.
