So I was on the good laptop and I was going through the program list because I noticed that this thing (not even a year old) is slower at start up then my 4 year old desktop. so I went into the add/remove programs and I found some things thta I want to delete/ seem wayyyyy to big. here is a screen shot on the program.

The Java size is fine but you don't need all three. Just keep Update 9 and remove the other 2.

If you don't have any symantec products (norton) you can also remove Symantec Live Update.

You should note that the sizes reported in Add/Remove programs arn't really that accurate.

There are a couple of nifty programs in this thread that will show disk usage graphically.

you really do not "need" java at all.
it's required only when you visit certain websites, and not many at that.

my plan is if i absolutely need java then i will install then after i am done i uninstall and remove the registry keys that was added.

If startup time is your primary concern, I recommend you use CCleaner's 'Startup' section under the 'Tools' tab. Here, you can remove unneeded startup entries. Try to remove everything you can (short of your security apps - antivirus, anti-spyware, firewall, etc), and your startup times should improve.

Also, there are TONS of websites that use java! Yahoo is huge on it. A lot of Hewlett Packard's printers come with java web configuration pages. It is supposed to be one of the most portable languages (meaning it runs on almost any operating system). Installation takes a good while on even the fastest machines, so installing it on demand is quite the proposition! I certainly don't have the time!

This is what I would do personally...you may disagree, and its your machine, your call.

    I would get rid of:

Skype - I'd let it launch only when needed (I wouldn't be making phone calls ALL the time)
Dell Wireless Manager UI - Again, only on demand for me - you might do alot of wireless activity?
DVDLauncher - This one I would get rid of for sure! I'd only run it when needed
QuickTime Task - That one just pisses me off (told you it was personal)
DMXLauncher - Y'know... there's utilities specifically made to remove dell crap
    Host Manager - See above
Messenger Plus 3 - Not needed until MSN launches
    IPH Send - Dell Decrapifier????
Dell Quickset - Damn those guys are annoying
Webshots - think this is possibly malware! Even if it isn't, I'd say it can go
Microsoft Office - I don't know anyone who actually uses the quick launch stuff in Office

    Maybes:

Digital Line Detect - Depends if you use a digital telephone

Wow, that should help your startup times quite a bit!

Well, this is a Dell utility to configure your network card. If you are connected to the same wireless network all the time, then it is hardly needed.

Heck, even if you are changing networks alot, Windows has a utility to do the SAME thing! Why does Dell need to include ANOTHER one?!?!? They are all about the glossy software that does nothing you can't already do....they sure are pretty, though!
