I have said it many times but noone believes, MSE is one of the worse antivirus programs out there! Yes it is light on resources but it sucks big time in protection!

I have had 2 viruses crawl twice on to my system even though I am a safe user. Furthermore, it sucks in deleting any threats

    AV-TEST - The Independent IT-Security Institute: Jul/Aug 2012

    Avast! Free Antivirus FTW!

I didn't personally have MSE installed, I had it installed for my little sister who goes to Games sites for kids

when I visited home, I checked her PC and she had a popup from MSE saying that it detected 2 viruses, they were not viruses, but rather, false positives (I think one of them was a program that could extract your Office product keys / windows product keys so you can back them up incase you didn't have them), so I thought anyway, let me just delete them through MSE and get done with it since I never used those 2 apps anyway, MSE did its thing and I thought greaT! now we're done

then a few mins later, that same pop up from MSE comes up again saying that it dected them again, and it kept doing it! I restarted, went into safe mode, but MSE kept reporting them. and I am 100% sure they are safe as they were not detected by my previous Kaspersky Internet Security nor Eset Smart Security nor Bitdefender Internet Security

That's my simple story and it is just false positives, I can only imagine how one might be infected but never know since he has that piece of crap called MSE that many people believe in. But tests online show the opposite

Just go to Wilders Security Forums and see what people think of that junk

Sure it not the buggy XP OS that's being used as it not being security updated these days as Vista, Win 7 is?

Security apps are only as good as the end user makes them out to be while one will work for one user then the same will not work for another, depends on their habits of surfing and downloading and where from.

You only "think" one was a program that could extract Office keys, need to be more confident here, what was the app listed as nasty? as some legit apps and Nirsoft have a few that will trigger any AV as they are apps designed to search files for data as in say email passwords in case you forgot, but they are apps that can be listed by an AV as malicious, they are not wrong in the designation but the end user needs to know what they installed or used that could trigger this.

Sure Kav or Eset Or BitDef didn't miss anything? to be 100% honest you cannot trust any AV at all, they all have variable dat files to look for various malware so "may" not be correct, they may see some apps as ok as in the aforementioned "email password finder" but they are in theory a malicious application if in the wrong hands.

All Anti-virus apps have false positives and none are better or worse than the other, so you takes your chances and if you keep said favoured AV up to date and your OS and apps upto date and SAFE SURF then your should be ok.

Since you believe it was false positives; did you update the virus definitions after the first instance?

Most AV come up with false positives from time to time; the important thing is how quick they issue a correction.

Great thread, good points made. In my experience applying updates and patches to the supported OS you are using, along with a firewall and a decent AV program are going to keep you in decent shape. Adding some real time malware protection such as http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=5756 adds another layer of protection.

As DavidGP suggested, Safe Surfing is critical and often under-rated.

Other things one might consider are running a sand box, a virtual machine or even surfing the web with a Linux Live CD.

    Ultimately, there are no guarantees.

I build custom PCs and have loaded MSE on at least 10 without any problems and have run it on my 2 PCs for over 1 year.
I have one client who no matter what protection you give him he will get virus/trojans and such because he is a lunatic and spends most of his time in warez/porn sites but all the rest are happy bunnies.
When i load an OS (customers choice) i put MSE as the antivirus and use Microsoft firewall then i install SUPERAntiSpyware Free from MGs http://majorgeeks.com/SUPERAntiSpyware_d5116.html and basically that is all unles a customer wants Malwarebytes Anti-Malware which is shareware and that is also available from here.

If they use safe surfing then that is 90% of the problems removed.

You know, I have not been infected for the last 10 years (malware or virus), and been prompted to quarantine twice at the most. I have yet to see ANY antivirus that is 100% foolproof. Where there is a will, there is a way. At some point, the blame has to lie squarely on the user's shoulders.

Safe computing is just like safe sex, you don't engage in risky activities UNLESS you yourself know how to avoid the risks.

Prophylactics fail, and so does antivirus. However in each case, infection could have been avoided by the user.
