Proplem with Sigmatel Audio Device

Hello,

I have a year old Gateway Laptop 400TVX. Recently the modem and audio stopped working.

There is a yellow ! mark next to the Sigmatel Audio Device. Also, when I look at the hardware tab in the Sound and Audio Device in the Control Panel I see that all other components are working, except for the SigmaTel, which has the following error message:

Sigma Tel C-Major Audio
Location: PCI Bus 0, Device 31, function 5
Device state: This device cannot start (code 10)

Trying to remove the device and to install it with updated driver did not help, even after I formatted the hard drive and installed xp again with updated drivers.

Finally, when I try to access the modem (which depends on the audio device), the fan begins immediately to work like crazy.


Any suggestions for what else I can try?

when that happened to my laptop, it turned out the damn thing is dead, even though windows recognizes it
