Protecting your computer with encryption

Is there a way to further fortify your computer through encryption. I think I read something about that somewhere (not here). Are there programs that encrypt your computer so Malware has trouble accessing your computer? Am I off my rocker?

 

It looks like most of the programs encrypt certain files or are meant for transmissions. I was thinking more along the lines of making your computer "blurry" so other computers can't see you unless you want them to see you. And maybe that isn't something the common user wants (I'm a common user).

You are right about making your system more secure not just transmissions.

 

Thanks, I got some very useful tools from that link. I think encryption is a little bit beyond what I need, though. It isn't quite what I was thinking it was.
