Protection setup before linking to infected HD.

Hi I've read the "How to Protect yourself from Malware" thread and have a question about what my set up should be.

I'm making sure I have the best setup because I got this "USB 2.0 to SATA&IDE adapter". Were I can plug in a HD from an old PC. I know it died from the motherboard but I was pretty sure it was loaded up with some malware too. I still want some old files off it though.

Before I even start I should ask...if I link to an old HD that's infected in some way....will the malware auto-matically jump from the slave HD to the PC HD?...or would that only happen if I copy an infected file? Like will I have chance to scan it once I link to it?

My question about the setup, in the "How do I protect myself" thread it suggests:

"What do we recommend for antispyware?

• One realtime blocking tool from the list. Malwarebytes would be top of the list.
• SpywareBlaster with all protection enabled."

But is the spyware in addition to the anti-virus? 'cause I thought we weren't supposed to run more than one at once? If not would this be an ideal setup before I link to my old HD?

Avast anti-virus
Malware bytes (payed)
Spyware blaster
(my router has a firewall)

Or is that too much?
