The_Canadian, give us as much a descriptive idea as to what you want to achieve with the setup in your drawing.. and no doubt someone will be able to assist?

Best guess is that you wish to hook up your PS2 to the network to play games online? if so then I hope someone can assist you in doing that.

Does your modem have an ethernet port that can go to your computer? Or is it only USB?

If it's only USB, you'll need to setup your computer with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). It is built into Windows, and it's not a big deal to setup, but the downside is that anytime you want to play your PS2 online, your computer will need to be on.

If you have an Ethernet Jack on your modem, the best solution would be to buy a router and plug your computer and PS2 into the router. With this setup, your computer doesn't need to be on in order to play games with your PS2.

Also, I just realized that what you are referring to in those pictures as an ethernet cable, is not ethernet. It looks like you have DSL and that wire is coming from your phone jack. It's just a regular phone jack connector.

---It would help if you could post a picture of the backside of your modem.

I have one of those Speedtouch modems in my spares box Wyatt and its only USB, no ethernet ports at all, so I think your Router ( could even combine it with an ADSL router ) method would be the best solution.

pic 4 shows the only connector ports which as the phone jack and the USB cable which goes into the PC.

some info on using a router and PS2 for online gameing.

    ok so DSL=no ethernet cord

My modem does not have a ethernet cord it only usb that splits up to aphone jack and a usb to go into the computer. Lets say i set up a "ICS" which i have no clue how to set up.. then what do i plug into my network adapter.. what cord?

i dont mind if my comp is on.. it alwas on anyway. Question : ICS will it lag? can i go on the internet and play ps2 online?

You will need an ethernet port on your computer... You might have one onboard. Otherwise, you'll need to buy an ethernet card.

No, ICS will not lag your PS2 anymore than your internet connection itself.

I should have asked this first, but what operating system do you have?

Here is a cut and dry explanation of ICS from Microsoft:

This website seems to be a little more user friendly:

alright well im pretty sure i got a ethernet port because i checked a while back and i saw a input where i could connect a ethernet wire..anyway of making sure this is a ethernet port??

So if this is a ethernet port .. i will need to be a ethernet cord and plug into my comp and my network adapter?

Yes i am runnning on microsoft windows Xp Home edition

Yes. There are 2 ways to connect the PS2 to your computer.

    1) If you go directly to your PS2, you'll need a crossover cable. It is different than a regular (patch) cable. Many times, there will be writing on the cables that will say either patch or crossover.

    2) If you have a switch and 2 patch cables, you can connect them this way. Plug the computer into one port of the switch and the PS2 into another port.

In order to identify if you have an ethernet port, you could take a picture and post it here, or you can give us the make/model of your motherboard (this will tell us if you have onboard ethernet), or you can right click on My Computer, and choose properties, then click the hardware tab, then device manager. Any ethernet cards you have will show up under "Network Adapters". Dial up modems will also show up there. If you aren't sure, post the list of devices under network adapters and we can tell you if you have one.

Yes, it looks like you have an onboard ethernet card. You'll need to go to your motherboard manufacturer's website and download the correct drivers though.

If you post your motherboard make/model, we can point you in the right direction.

windows update had nothing that related to updating my ethernet driver.

I was about to download the thing u recomened .. it says that the operating system is windows 2000 and that it might to work with any other OS.. Should i still download it?

  20. Wyatt_Earp

    Wyatt_Earp MajorGeek

Yeah, if I were you, I'd try it. However, make sure to set a system restore point before you try installing the driver. So that way if it messes anything up, you'll be able to undo it.

This driver says it works with XP, you may want to try it. But, I would still set a system restore point.

nope the yellow ? is still there..

OK. Right click on the ethernet controller. Select Update Driver. Select "Install from a specific location". Select "Search for the best driver in these locations". Point the selector to the directory where you unzipped the files to. Follow the rest of the prompts. Hopefully it will find a driver better suited than the one that is currently not there.
