I want to make a lab PSU, I tried connecting the green wire to the black wire and nothing happened. I tried connecting the purple wire to the green wire, and it blinks on and off really fast, but no stable power.

I'll post pics of the PSU in a bit along with the wiring outputs.

Hey Speculant. What do you mean by a 'lab' PSU?

I'm sure hes talking about making a way he can turn that PSU on and off without it being in a computer so i guess he can test parts, etc, etc without having to install them in a computer.

With that PSU only being 200watts have you thought about finding an older one that has a power switch to turn it off and on? I use to have a 486 that had that type of PSU and i used that PSU like that to test things until it gave out.

I have a newer 585watt PSU (X POWER brand, 24-pin main power connector, and a power switch) that works just fine as a lab PSU. I just had to short the green and black connectors. I thought this trick would work with the 200watt PSU, because when I plug it in, it "blinks" on for a millisecond before turning off. I have tried hooking up a load to it (several CD/DVD drives and hard drives) but it still won't stay on (with the newer 585watt PSU, there is no load needed for it to stay on continuously).

N5638J was right in explaining that I want a PSU that stays on (supplying power to all connectors) without having to be connected to a computer.

Maybe a dumb question, but you know the PSU is good to go right? It works when attached to a mobo? To the best of my knowledge the green connector is the PS_ON connection, and should activate the PSU whenever it's grounded (which is exactly what you did). Check out the second paragraph here:

Yeah, the PSU powers right up when attached to the mobo. Like I said earlier, the green wire trick doesn't work.

"I have tried hooking up a load to it (several CD/DVD drives and hard drives) but it still won't stay on"

This won't load the 3.3 rail try hooking up a light bulb or something to that rail (orange)
some psu's won't start without load on the 3 main rails.
Running a switchmode psu without loading the rails (even if it is starting up) can reduce it's life expectancy.
