Ok, I guess first I should cover what happened with my Toshiba satellite laptop with Windows 7 on it. Sunday I started it up and right away noticed it running slow, then my antivirus Avast would not update and my homepage (my hotmail inbox) took too long to open. I use Google chrome and tried to go several sites that would not open saying the host could not be found. I checked my connection - DSL through Centurylink, and it was good and strong. I was not even able to open a search page though I could get to some sites. I tried using my desktop PC and it worked fine so I knew then something was wrong with the laptop. I have Zonealarm free on both of them. I ran a Malwarebytes (which I already have installed) full scan even though it too could not update.
It found some 32 infected folders and files that had something called PUP on them. I removed all of them using the Malwarebytes, rebooted and everything seemed back to normal. I updated everything and had no problems on Monday.
This morning, Tuesday, the problems were back. I did a quick scan using Malwarebytes and with the Avast and they both found nothing. Next I tried to reset the computer to an earlier date 03/17/2014 but it would not do it, and I got a message that the process failed. I tried resetting to an even earlier date and that too failed. I then tried to open up Google Chrome so I could go online to your site and it would not open. A message would come up saying that "locale files could not be found, Please reload them". I then tried Internet Explorer which I still have on my desktop but haven't used in a long time. It would try to open but said the page could not be found.
I went into my computer's C files and was able to open Google chrome from there. It will also open from my desktop icon now. I ran another full scan using Malwarebytes right before logging onto your site and this time it found 15 infected files which it removed.
I read and ran all the steps you had on the "Read this first page" and have all the logs from the different security programs you listed. Both of the Malwarebytes full scan logs are included in the attachments. The Tdskiller logs of which there are four are not included because I could only submit 5 logs. Let me know how you would want those submitted and if you want any of the info from running the CCleaner.
Since the Malwarebytes did not solve the problem after the first full scan, I doubt the second scan today did either. I need to know what I should do next to be sure my machine is clean and to keep this from happening again. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Other than the junkware noted by Malwarebytes, I'm not really seeing too much. And much most of what Malwarebytes found is due to ZoneAlarm's Conduit JUNKWARE toolbar.

Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
(or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
this log file to your next message.

Be patient while doing the below. The fixes can sometimes take quite awhile to run. Especially the permissions repairs. It may be best to kick it off and goto bed or do something else. It is better not to run anything while the repairs are going on.

Download Windows Repair by Tweaking.com and unzip the contents into a newly created folder on your desktop.
    • Now run Repair_Windows.exe by double clicking on it ( if you are running Vista or Win 7, use right click and select Run As Administrator)
    • Now select the Start Repairs tab.
    • The click the Start button.
    • Create a System Restore point if prompted.
    • On the next screen, click the Unselect All button to first deselect all repairs.
    • Now select the following repair options:
      • Reset Registry Permissions
      • Reset File Permissions
      • Register System Files
      • Repair WMI
      • Remove Policies Set By Infections
      • Repair Winsock & DNS Cache
      • Repair Proxy Settings
      • Repair Windows Updates
      • Repair MSI (Windows Installer)
    • Now on the lower right side check the box to Restart/Shutdown System When Finished
    • Then make sure the Restart System radio button is enabled.
    • Shutdown any other programs that you are running now before continuing.
    • Now click the Start button.
    • Be patient while the tool repairs the selected items.
    • It should reboot automatically when finished.

Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXT log
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hi Chaslang,

Thank you so much for all the help and please let me know if there is anything i can do to make sure you get credit for helping me. First let me say that my laptop has been working alright so far today, nice and speedy with no page loading problems.
I ran all the programs you had listed and have what I hope are the correct files on my desktop to attach to this message. They all seemed to run correctly, I am just not sure about the downloads. Let me know if I sent the wrong things.

    Sincerely,
    Susan

    Hi there.

Chaslang has been extremely busy of late, so I have dropped in to wrap things up with you.
We just like that you spread the word about us to family and friends. However, we do now have a yellow coloured donate button that's been installed recently. This sits on the main forum page. It's also mentioned in my signature (at end of all my posts) If you would like to gift a small amount to the website, it would be most appreciated. :)

Those logs look great, Chaslang removed what junk he found. Ready for final steps?

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware.
    2. Renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it in step 4 of the READ & RUN ME.
    3. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis. If you don't see it or it will not uninstall, don't worry about it. Just move on to the next step.
    4. If running Vista, Win 7 or Win 8, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    6. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.

    7. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

    Hi Kestrel,

I haven't had any more problems since running all the scans and following Chaslang's instructions, so I guess my machine is clean now. I followed your instructions and removed all the downloaded programs except for CCleaner and Malwarebytes which I already had and use on occasion. I changed my firewall to Comodo from the Zone Alarm which I had. I have windows updates set to run automatically as needed and to ask my permission for downloads.
When I downloaded the Comodo it offered to configure it for me and I skipped that part. Is there something that needs to be done to it for it to operate correctly?
Thank you again for your help and I did use the donate button to help keep this site up and running. I have to go and find a good cheap source for a windows 7 upgrade for my old desktop that has XP on it, now to keep that machine safe.

    Thanks Kestrel13! :)

You may be better off allowing Comodo to configure itself. Some people find it to be a little too inquisitive. It is a good firewall though.
