    Hello,
    I am working on removing some malware from my dad's computer. He's not sure what he installed that initiated it. Malwarebytes returns the malware name as some variant of PUP.Optional.

    Running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

    I have run through the Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure up through step 4 and have attached the logs.

    There is also a strange screensaver hijack that is occurring. I am unsure whether it is related to the malware that has been detected or if it is something else entirely. Here are two pictures of the screensaver:

    It has a solid color background that changes every few seconds. There is also a small colored box that changes color simultaneously with the background and contains red numbers (153: 40 and similar) The numbers also change and may be keeping time but the arrangement of numbers does not represent a clock.

    Thanks for looking!

    Are you deliberately set up to use a proxy?

    No, there should not be a proxy set up on this computer. I do recall now having issues with that when this problem first presented itself. It's been several weeks since I first looked at the computer. I had tried reverting the internet options to not use a proxy and after every restart the options would be set to use a proxy.

    You need to re run Malware Bytes and allow it to fix what it finds...

    http://img805.imageshack.us/img805/9659/rktigzy.gif Fix items using RogueKiller.

    Double-click RogueKiller.exe to run. (Vista/7/8 right-click and select Run as Administrator)
    When it opens, press the Scan button
    Now click the Registry tab and locate these detections:

    • [PUM.Proxy] (X64) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings | ProxyServer : http=127.0.0.1:8800;https=127.0.0.1:8800 -> Found
    • [PUM.Proxy] (X86) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings | ProxyServer : http=127.0.0.1:8800;https=127.0.0.1:8800 -> Found

    Place a checkmark next to each of these items, leave the others unchecked.
    Now press the Delete button.
    When it is finished, there will be a log on your desktop called: RKreport[2].txt
    Attach RKreport[2].txt to your next message. (How to attach)
    Reboot the machine.

    Re run Hitman and have it remove Malware Remnants and Potential Unwanted Programs.

    Download Cleano 0.61

    Download it to your desktop, Right click the cleano.exe file and run as admin > and place check marks in the boxes as follows (click on link below to see image)

    View attachment 148092
    Click clean now and exit the program.

    http://imageshack.us/a/img841/7292/thisisujrt.gif Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.

    Now re run both Hitman and RogueKiller again (just scans) and attach logs.

    Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it. (Right click and run as admin if using Vista, Windows7 or Win8) Then attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file that will be created by running this.
    Let me know of any problems you may have encountered with the above instructions and also let me know how things are running!

    I've run the scans and attached logs. One thing of note: Initially I was probably trying to adhere too strictly to when you said I should reboot the system. When trying to run Hitman I got a BSOD. After rebooting it experienced two crashes but no BSOD. I rebooted again and it seemed to run fine.

    RogueKiller still seems to find a few things but I've only run the scan the 2nd time not the fix like you said.

    I do still have the strange screensaver that I mentioned in the first post. I've tried googling various things related to it but have had no luck so far.

    Does it over ride any screensaver or desktop background you set?
