Purpose of Ethernet Controller?

    Question, please..What is the purpose of an ethernet controller?? I am running Windows XP, using a dial-up connection, manually installed connection. I am showing problem in my device manager with ethernet controler and have been told I only need to worry about it if I am connected to other computers using a network (ie..network of computers). Is this true? Thanks in advance..:)

    the Ethernet controller is used to Lan connections aka computer to computer and broadband aka DSL/Cable/T1/T3/Sat
