For the benefit of others reading this thread a manual reset of Winsock didn't work.

Okay, 5 pages of info, but on the 5th page nothing shows.

    Anyway, I have a question.

IE seems to be the culprit?

How fast is Yahoo Instant messenger when IM'ing back and forth? What about a file transfer using this?

What clicking start, run, Type in: CMD (press enter)

    ping www.majorgeeks.com

    or ping 67.19.72.101

    Or tracert 67.19.72.101

A few other things to look into, is this DSL or Cable internet? If DSL, try a different phone cable from the wall socket to the modem.

IM back and forth is fairly quick, and yes I do think IE is the culprit here. Now that I am actually using Yahoo Messenger instead of GAIM, we'll see how well a file transfer works.

Was all IE settings set as default? I'd rather not go through the 4 pages again. ;)

I noticed winsock fix was ran, what about LSPfix?

Haven't reset IE to defaults yet. I was going to post the steps her for laurie just haven't got to it yet. No, LSPfix hasn't been ran yet.

OK, file tranfer with Yahoo Messenger works; so, it is definutely an IE issue.

  9. theefool

    theefool Geekified

The LSPfix may or may not do it. The default IE may fix. I refuse to offer a rebuild.

If within IE, Click on Tools, Internet Options.....

Click the button, Clear History (yes), Delete Cookies (yes), Delete Files....Check the box "Delete all offline Contenet" (Press ok).

Next, click the Security tab....If Default level is there, then select it. If not, select "Local Intranet", then select default Level, same with Trusted sites and Restricted sites.

Also, knowing what (Local Intranet, Trusted Sites, Restricted Sites) SITES button is, may help.

Privacy tab, make sure it is Medium (Default),

Connections tab, press the button Lan settings.

Uncheck "automatically detect settings" and "Use a proxy server blah blah". Press okay

Next, go to advanced, and press Restore defaults.

Press okay, quit IE, then Rerun IE.

This is the most basic way to run IE with defaults....

Firefox is an application you installed on your computer. If you don't run it, it will not come up automatically.

Once we have IE up and running, you don't have to use Firefox again.

GOOD MORNING AND ALOHA. its a dark and rainy day here. but its early yet.

firefox is not as fast as IE used to be, although its not as painfully slow as it is now. im not sure its running normally though. i take it i now have to operate some of the programs lol. did you want me to go back to the read first in spyware and follow the instructions, or are we past that?

  24. laurieB

    laurieB MajorGeek

went back to IE and went through all those steps again. the only one i had to change is this one. why dont i want it to automatically detect settings?

Run HijackThis and Click-on Open the Misc Tools section button; click-on the Open Uninstall Manager ... button; click-on Save list ... button; and save the list. Now post your Uninstall list as an attachement. I'll look for things that can be uninstalled.

THere is a bunch of stuff in there I don't recognize as valid programs. You can uninstall Veiwpoint, All or the Java versions except for update 4. Java 5 update is the latest.

    please run this uninstaller -http://www.bestoffersnetworks.com/uninstall/

Then post a new uninstall log.

OK, let's move this to Spyware.

    Run HJT

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Start a thread in Spyware.
