I still occasionally program in it. Can't help you right at the moment, but I will get back with you.

Just some background information, how's your basic computer literacy with Windows, and BASIC in general?

What OS are you using in Windows?

There is a site that has GWBASIC. GWBASIC is an older version of BASIC, that has a lot in common with QBASIC. QBASIC has a lot more features, and can do things like run without line number. In many cases the two are interchangable. The thing I like about both codes is you can write BASIC using notepad or word (notepad tends to not try to correct so much).

In QBASIC and GWBASIC there are basic utilities, such as renumber, that can be nice if you are writting code in their native formats.

I gave up on this sites forum, due to popups. I won't guarentee it is malware free, but the manuals are handy. English is a second language for the owner instructor, but for all that he does it well.

Later edit note: evidently I am wrong about his English, his bio says he's American, but a lot of people in his forum were asian. Can't find the forum either, guess he gave up on it.

If you want to continue this conversation just let me know, Q-Basic does have an extensive help file that I suspect you'll like, assuming you haven't found it already.

I have bought a manual for GWBASIC off of eBay that I am quite fond of. I'm sure you can do something similar for Q-BASIC. The one item I would like for either is a compiler, which translates the code into something closer to machine language.

While these languages will work on XP, there are pitfalls, expecially on laptops. One of them is the sound features, which is designed for the computer speaker. You have to remember that these languages were developed about the same time as early DOS, and have a lot of the same limitiations.

The BASIC I am most familiar with is the old Commdore code, especially the C128. All of these BASICs were written by M/S, so if you learn one, picking up another is relatively easy.

One of my goals is to set up a software drop point for my personal programs, but so far no go. Email sites such as Hotmail choke on BASIC, they are too afraid of viruses, and don't like the .bas extension. Dumb really, any modern virus would be written in a much more modern language.

Hope this was of some help.

Just thought I'd mention, using the Ask search engine, there are huge resources for QBASIC out there, probably more than for GWBASIC. I went through this several years ago though, they come and go without notice, so if you find one you like don't assume it will be there later.

For example, the first one that came up...

I'm a member of both the current qbasic.com forum (forum.qbasic.com) and the old one (now archives) We're looking for more members, BTW. Anyway, I program in QBasic on my IBM PC-XT, and also on Pentiums and newer. I use only versions 1.0 and 1.1, but there are newer ones available from Microsoft's website. I also use GW-BASIC and BASICA (which only works on IBMs) and have tried FreeBasic. I used to watch my Mom program in TI-BASIC. I've been using QBasic for about a decade. I find the best way for me to learn is to have the help window open, and explore it and try the example programs. I get the hang of it, and try my own or make a change to the example, then search for why it doesn't work. There are few commands that can actually hurt anything (I find that file commands on the wrong file or data, memory commands like POKE, and CALL ABSOLUTE are the most risky, in reverse order.) I also used to get books at the library, but they seem to have been purged from the shelves these days.

Corrections: That address was wrong for the forums, it is actually www.qbasic.com/forum
My screenname there is not PC-XT, but OptionBase0
Also, it often helps to have other people to help you. Nobody around me is interested as much as I am, so I learned mostly by myself (and from my Mom at the beginning, and from books, but mostly from the help system and experience). If you have a QBasic question you can't solve, you may PM me at the qbasic forum, or here. I often take a couple weeks break from forums, though, so don't hold your breath or anything. But I'm glad to help.

I apologize for the errors. My brother needed the computer fast...
