this hotfix q815411 fixes a slowdown problem in XP. But this fix does not appear in Windows update. Why is this and is it safe to install manually?

 

welI went ahead and installed this , now my virus scan takes 4 hours to complete my hard drive.. I don't know if this is the cause but I'm thinking maybe.. what do you think?

The patch is for a particular private app not available to the public. The chances of you seeing any improvement in XP with this patch is slim to none, and slim just left town

BTW, that patch is not regression tested, so if it fubars your system, well, you were forewarned

 

great.. someone tell Mastertech to take that out of his guide. He tells everyone with XP sp1 to install it, and even has a direct link to the file.

I will try to uninstall it tonight.. maybe I should just to a clean install... who knows what this patch did.

Hotfixes that have not be regression tested are for all intents and purposes, beta. They are subject to change.


If tested hotfixes can mess things up on WIndows Update, imagine what non tested ones can do!


With that said, I have seen non public hotfixes fubar machines. Thats why when a tech calls me regarding sending a customer one, I make absolutely for sure it addresses their issue before sending it to the customer. That, and after sending the hotfix, we call them and make sure everything is ok, and continue troubleshooting, in the event the hotfix didn't work, or broke something.

IIRC, all this hotfix does is replace the ntdll.dll with a new copy.

 

so if i uninstall it will replace the old copy? i have never uninstalled a hotfix before

Correct, provided the uninstaller works correctly.

 

Also, you can use System Restore to remove this as well.

 

I don't use sustem restore, i have it disabled

 

thanks, will try it when i get home. i am anxious to see if this hotfix is the reason my system is actually slower now. I installed it 3 days ago and didn't notice anything until last night.. especially after my virus scan took 4 hours to complete.

yes. I went home last night and uninstaled it. I rebooted and I still noticed a strange lag in the system. I am going to reformat tonight while i guzzle a six-pack.
