Quake 4 problems.

I had to re install Quake 4 (DVD version) yesterday after being half way through it The installation seemed to go fine.When the menu screen loads up I click on "play",then the screen goes black then gray and the desktop flashes for about a second with really large icons then back to the desktop as normal.Does anyone know why this is.Any help would be very welcome.I updated all drivers so I really dont know what the problem is.I installed Far Cry and FEAR today and both work fineThanks in advance.

We need more information, like system specs and operating system etc.

 

If the game worked before and does not now, with nothing else being changed on the system, it narrows things down but still not entirely. Firstly uninstall and reinstall the laters video drivers. This might not work as you get the menu up and everything so your openGL drivers etc. work fine. Next find the q4config.cfg file in your game and delete it, then try to play again. This will reset everything back to defaults. Also check your graphics settings in the game and make sure everything is ok, and the resolution selected is supported by your monitor.
But really we need more information.

AMD X2 DUAL CORE 3800+
XP PRO
GEFORCE 7800 GTX
2 Gig Ram
ViewSonic VX 922.

I changed over from XP HOME to Pro over a week ago but it still worked fine and the monitor was got a few days ago too but it played on it too.I must have uninstalled and reinstalled about 20 times now and on different partitions but I still get the same.I will try with the GFX drivers again and the quake file.But hopefully this will shead a bit more lights on it

 

Those specs are more than enough to run Q4 so go with what jedandjess said, update your drivers from nvidias site.

 

I've tried all of the above and Im still getting the same results.I just cannot find the q4config.cfg file anywhere.Im pretty sure its a display problem with the way the desktop is flashing with the larger icons but cannot understand as it worked before and all other games work.Would the fact it was installed on a different partition before make any difference?

 

The larger icons are probably because quake changes your screens resolution, and maybe it doesn't return to normal like it's supposed to. have you tried re-installing the game?

 

Must have uninstalled and reinstalled about 20 times and on different partitions of the hard drive which is a 250gb SATA drive if that matters,thanks anyway.
