Quality control where is it?

I had some Crucial Balistix RAM with a lifetime warranty start failing MemTest, so I arranged for a RMA. No problems, I shipped the RAM to them, and they sent me some new RAM. Would not run, turns out that was my fault, seems like I changed the voltage. Bumpted up to the level they recommended, and all is well.

But one stick of this RAM has about 1/16" distance from the RAM chips and the heat spreader. I mean, I can see between the chips and the heat spreader. Bad quality control, or the heat spreader is just ornamental. I know the heat spreader on my OCZ RAM would be pretty warm to the touch. The OCZ is my backup RAM.

A quote from the Email I got from Crucial: "Thank you for your e-mail. The chances of getting 2 sets of bad memory are slim to none."

Maybe I am just too picky. I kinda like the heat spreaders to be in contact with the RAM. If I removed the heatspreaders, I would void the warranty. But they sent me one with it pretty much removed on one side, thus voiding my confidence in them.

Guess I will try the 'Live Chat' junk before work Wednesday. Oh well, it is up and running, games work, just kinda frustrated with bad quality componants.

    Hi Fred

Sadly it is just the way society is just now :( Getting products out into the market as quick as possible, cutting the odd corner to save time and money.
Whether it be PC's, houses or cars it is the same old story. :)

Looks like Crucial is stepping up and taking care of me! I got an email with prepaid UPS shipping! Ok, where are those printer drivers... I will print this out at work Friday and ship it to them on their dime. I like that.

I got 2 emails from them, so it looks like they are doing the right thing. I will talk bad about a company, but will also praise a company when they treat people right. Now I am returning the replacement RAM they sent me on a warranty exchange, so we will see what I get when I get it.

This is just funny to me. I was getting everything ready to go tonight. But where is my RMA#?

    From Crucial:

    Hello Eric,

Thank you for contacting us. Please write your RMA number on the outside of your package and return the product to Crucial Technology within 10 business days. A prepaid UPS label will be sent to 'myemailaddress.com', to cover the return shipping for your second RMA.

    Send your return to:
    RMA Dept - RMA #
    3475 E. Commercial Ct.

Please return the product to Crucial and package each piece individually in an antistatic bag(s) or place appropriately in the slots of ESD tray(s) and ship in any sturdy box. Please follow this process so that the product does not receive any damage while being returned. Crucial will not be responsible for damage to an improperly packaged product. Please retain shipping information, including tracking numbers, until your account or original credit card has been credited by Crucial or until you receive a replacement product. When returning any non-memory item (graphics card, flash drive, or card reader), in order to receive full credit you must also return all accessories (cables, manuals, or CDs) that shipped with the product. If accessories are missing, $5 will be deducted from your refund.

If your product has a modification that is not covered by our limited warranty, we regret that we cannot issue you a refund or replace the product.

Resellers: To avoid a restocking fee and/or refusal of your RMA, remove any labels and glue residue that you may have added to the product(s), leaving the OEM, Crucial, or Rendition labels intact.

I've never had to do a multiple RMA

But I would have assumed the email you just quoted would have had the new RMA number in it :(

Surely you cannot re-use your original RMA number :confused

When you finally get good RAM from them it had better be very shiny :)

    Update:

Crucial has apologized and extended the RMA and shipping times, and has actually provided me with the elusive RMA number.

Let's just see what they send me next...

'Prolly someone from Crucial reads this very thread. Ya think? LoL LOL.
Good to see you're getting some positive action at least, Fred.

~ Haven't had any hassles with Crucial, myself.

It is only right for me to post the details as I get them. I was pretty funny for me to get a shipping label and no RMA#. I just want the RAM I paid for working properly... (with the heat spreader actually touching the RAM)

Got my 'new' RAM from Crucial today!:D They sent the same defective stick or it's twin back to me. I am not joking, I have 2 people who watched me open the RAM and I showed the defect to them.

Crucial is not a company I am happy with.

Phantom, I wonder if they have any observation skills. Got some picts of the second RMA RAM.

Got off the phone with Crucial a little while ago. Seems they had a batch of RAM with defective heatspreader clips... So they are going to upgrade me to 2x1Gb sticks and crossship them to me. I will post back with results.

Got my new RAM in today! The heatspreaders are in the right place! RAM seems to be doing well. The timings they recommended seem a little high to me, but that is pretty much black magic there...

Well, my DFI Ultra mobo is up with CAS 3 4 4 8 mem timings running 2.8 volts.

Will consider Crucial the next time I need RAM.
