    Hi,
I am a computer novice, so I hope any replies won't be too technical. I need to know how keyloggers get on someone's computer. For example, can it be done over the internet, or thru an innocent download, or email? Thank you.

    Hi Sheena

Not very technical at all for you, in that the answer is YES, the options you gave are how keyloggers can get onto your PC, they can come in email attachments, infected webpages and done in person by someone using your PC without your knowledge.

Innocent downloads, well this depends where you download from, if its a well known safe download site like Majorgeeks, then no (unless you are actually downloading a keylogger as they do have serious side to them over malicious) but if downloading from an unknown site or off P2P (Torrents) then your open to getting anything in those downloads, while many maybe fine, the risk and why many are infected as that new movie or album on p2p may not be all its cracked upto be and maybe hiding malware etc

Here is some info on How to Protect yourself from malware!

    Hope this helps some

Thank you for your reply, Halo.
I did read the page about protecting the computer from malware before posting the question. For some reason, I had thought keyloggers might have to be manually put on a computer. How do I find out if I have them; what might be clues? I have real time protection and my daily scans show the computer as clean. My antimalware program is one of the site's recommended.

In this vein, how would one know if they have a keylogger on their computer?

    Hi

Many antimalware applications (Malwarebytes for example) can find many of these but not all, so best way to make sure yoru PC is free of them is to run the Read and Run Me guide that is a sticky in the malware forum and attach the logs for the malware experts to see, but would be worth starting a new thread in malware for this as I thought your question was just background over thinking you have a keylogger infection.

    Halo,
Just want to know what would be clues that might indicate a keylogger. I do alot of research, some of it sensitive for others; everything very legal and moral. But I am paranoid about security. So again, what might be clues one has a keylogger? Thanks.

    Hi

Not that many clues as by the very nature of keyloggers, they hide themselves very well, if you have a software firewall installed like Comodo, PCTools, ZoneAlarm or one from an Internet Security package like Norton or Macafee, then they tend to flag up an application wanting outgoing internet access, so you could look through the application list of the firewall to see if there is an application that is not known.

Run a scan with the likes of Malwarebytes its good at finding alot of unwanteds.

Thanks Halo. I do have the paid version of that malware, it shows me clean. Just have the windows firewall. Have recently had business dealings with a party I consider completely amoral, so worry something might have gotten on. Are you pretty sure if I do your malware page it will catch a keylogger? Also, I really don't know how to send logs to you. Do you programs have a fairly straightforward way to do that?
    Thanks again for your assistance.
    Sheena
