Question about my new baby's HSF.

I debated about posting this in the cooling forum, but since since my question's really about overclocking my processor...

Here's the relevant parts list of what I'm putting together:

Case: CM Stacker 810
PSU: Antec Phantom 500
MB: DFI Lan Party UT nF4 SLI-DR
Processor: Athlon 64 3000+ (Venice E6 stepping)
Memory: Patriot 2X1GB PC3200 (3-3-3-8) (PDC2G3200ELK R)
Graphics: XFX 7800 GT OC

I also have an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 HSF. I've seen glowing reviews on some websites, and a caution against using this heat sink for overclocking on another. I noted that the site that gave the negative OCing comment didn't mention testing the Freezer64 with the fan running at different RPMs.

Anywho - Does anyone have any experience with the Freezer64? Shoud I stick with the provided HSF or shop around more if I want to OC?

My plan is to, after 100 hours of burn-in or more, to try overclocking the CPU. I've got a tentative goal of 2.4 GHz.

From what Ive read, your Artic Cooling freezer 64 is OK for stock speeds, not recommended for OCing


If your OCing & going air cooled, I'd go with Thermalright's XP-90, XP-90c or XP-120

 

Thanks, I'll pricegrab those. I read on Anandtech that people have had good results OCing the A64 3000+ Venice with just the HSF that comes with the processor-in-a-box set, though, so maybe I can have my OC and eat my quiet... hmmm, that metaphor fell flat.

 

After Googling some reviews and checking some prices, the Thermalright XP-90 seems pretty sweet. The only problem is returning my Freezer 64 if I decide to go that route...

Any other thoughts out there?

You could always try your Freezer see what happens just keep eyes on temps, other factors contribute to overall cooling, fan speed, room temp, case airflow.
