    Hey guys.
I have a thing that reads the internal temperature of my computer. It has a function where I can set alarm temps. so that the system will warn me when the system gets close to the alarm temp. I can monitor the temps of the HDD, CPU and SYS temperatures. so my question is what temperatures should I set for these components.

    HDD alarm temp = ?
    CPU alarm temp = ?
    SYS alarm temp = ?

I think HDD alert should be 50 C (122 F). Both Sys and CPU alert should be at about 70 C (158 F). Depends on your processor though. Check the company's standards to see the normal temps of your CPU.

P.S. See if a more experienced geek confirms this cuz I am not sure

What are your current temps now and what is your cooling setup like?

The thing that shows the temps is part of my new computer. It has an LCD display that tells the internal temps, but i have not yet hooked the computer up, It came sooner than I had expected and have no where to put it, so it is still in box until I can get it out. I'm Asking about temps so that i know what to set the alarm temps when I set it up.

Sailor's got the right idea, but it varies abit depending on your cooling situation.

ok I finally got my computer up. It took me awhile to get a desk that would work functionally well with it. I booted the computer up and after running it awhile the normal operating temps are as follows

CPU = never exceeds 39 degrees Celsius
HDD = never exceeds 30 degrees Celsius
SYS = never exceeds 29 degrees Celsius

the default alarm temp for all of them is 52 degrees Celsius.
my system has two cooling fans, one at back 90mm and the other in front and 90 mm. the intel core 2 duo processor has its own fan and the 600 watt power supply also has a fan of its own but i don't know the spacifics about them.

so any suggestions on what temps to set as my alarms? :)

You must have one outstanding cooling system, those are LOW temperatures. I'm no expert, but I set mine about 5 degrees above where it was operating. My logic is you want to spot sudden changes.

Before you set the temps you probably want to stress that CPU a bit, to see where it's max will be. I noticed more than one program in the D/L section of MG that does just that, for overclockers I'm told. That or set up folding@home. ;)

I'd say the defaults are very conservative, but still leave you lots of headroom for temperature spikes. So leave them alone.

There's no point in setting the triggers for the alarms too low -- all you do there is stress yourself with false alarms to no useful purpose. Then you start ignoring them. And when you start ignoring alarms, why bother using them?

A general rule when configuring a computer: accept the defaults unless you have a reason to set another value and you know enough about what you're doing to understand the reason for setting another value.

I wasn't able to find the never-exceed temperature for your CPU chip (it may be in your documentation somewhere) but it's probably around 90C or above. Check with the hard drive manufacturer for its maximum safe temperature to be sure the default you have is appropriate for your hard drive(s).
