Nay! Lets go E6600 ($314) or if you are an overclocker then E6300 it is.;)
I'm going to build a somewhat budget gaming rig too and I got it all planned out. I don't want to make any recommendations until I can vouch for what I am going to build, but I got one hell of a plan. The numbers look real good.

you'd really go with a name over price and performance? an intel core 2 duo costs less and performs better than an AMD. i vote e6300 or 6600

I can see you saying that when Willamette was released. But with Core 2 and now quads, what's not to like?

cost.. around $100 for the cpu..

Is there anything wrong with a socket 939 4000+.. what is better in the same price range?

advice is why I asked.. and I appreciate all i receive..

That is still a bit more than I would like to spend.. hence the 939 idea

well in the long run, 939 will cost u more money because it wont last as long. if u go for AM2 then i wont fight u (as much ;)) but 939 is cheap for a reason.
sorry for sounding like an @$$

    no worries, man..

actually the rest of the build is geared for AM2 / crossfire.. in a year or so.. just looking for cheap speed for now..

How big of a difference does 1mb L2 make against that 512 of the AM2/

also, with AM2 u gotta remember that it uses ddr2, not ddr. ddr2 is about the same price as ddr now, if not cheaper in some cases. you'd probably only end up saving AT MOST $100 by going 939 over am2, probably not even that much

That is our point too. Are you planning on OCing? Then you have to go E6300 with the OC potential it has. Around $180 but you can really push it. Talk about value! Not to mention it smokes it straight up. I was gonna post the Tom's hardware page that Viper took the liberty of posting. It is a great resource. Check it out.

If your worried about keeping a budget, check out the C2D e4300. It can easily hit 3.0Ghz with cheaper, slower ram. It doesn't need the faster and more expensive DDR2 800 to reach 3.0Ghz like the e6300 does. It's about the same price as the e6300 and you save more with being able to use cheaper ram. Not to mention that overclocking it to 3.0Ghz will blow away a 4000+ hands down.
